two young people saw a dark blue beam in the sky , around Xmas, at dusk, about sixty miles north of Canberra.......it extended in a straight line to the horizon.
these two were die-hard chemtrail sceptics, but having seen this, are now more humble

update on the dark blue beam
sighted on the evening of Monday the 7th of January, while driving northeast on the Hume Hwy just out of Yass
this mysterious aerial phenomenonwas observed from before sunset until late dusk, perhaps 40 minutes, during which time it did not change
it ran dead-straight in a NE-SW line, all the way to the horizon. the two observers drove directly under it at one stage, at which time they checked its orientation relative to the sun.......it was found to be 10 or 15 degrees out of line with the sun
its height was estimated to be below 5000 feet, very roughly speaking, from the change of aspect made by the motion of the car, also, it could be seen to be beneath some cumulus clouds, and the colour of the cloud was affected as if through the filter of this beam
the height could have been as low as two or three thousand feet. when compared with the angle subtended by the width of a hand at arms length, this beam was half as wide again
the description included some bizzarre details: there were , within the width of the beam, perfectly parallel lines, not evenly spaced, which could not be seen to run the full length........
pics are on the way, but i have not seen them yet
there is also an exact fix of the place where the car passed directly beneath the beam, but it needs clarifying and cross-checking............ the information , generally, is of very high quality
Aw, steve, Y-O-Y are you posting/posing this in the UFO category? You don't want to derail your own topic, do you? In the interests of good housekeeping, could you re-post in one of the Weather topics? The answer is fairly straight forward, but it's nothing to do with UFOs. Cheers.
While we're waiting for the photos of the .... well, let's wait until we see it before we name it, here's the sun position data for 7 Jan 2008 between 7pm and 10pm at Yass.
Code:
Sun's azimuth and elevation on 7 Jan 2008

Hector, please do not try and give the impression that you are a moderator on this site - you are not.
I considered the designation of Steve's post and let it stand in this category because I believe he is making a point about the unexplained nature of the beam phenomenon.
If you wish to throw your weight around, go and do it on your own site, in your own forums. Then you'll have the freedom to organise them as you desire them to be, just as we have with this one.

well, i'm sorry to cause trouble, but i thought there are some really good threads at the moment , and i thought i could slip this question in, so as not to bury other peoples' good work
i look forward to hearing something from you, Hector, sometime, about thunderheads without convection drivers
the data for azimuth and elevation in this case are irrelevant........the fact was established of independence from the sun by a careful and fortuitous observation, by young people of high observational ability
the ephemeris also establishes that Mercury, Venus and the moon, cannot have been casting a shadow from the light of the sun
the reported parallel lines are reminiscent of the sort of interference-generated standing waves that you can see between your own fingers if you hold two fingers close and look between them
