Sunday November 18th 12.18pm I photographed this jet from Wellington City heading south. It was traveling along a flight path east of Wellington.
The exif data on the photo shows it was taken at 11.18 am, this is because I had neglected to change the clock for daylight savings.
The question is, can you help identify the craft using flight explorer??? |

well , smashdracs , it's a credit to you to have picked this up , i've seen pictures of planes with large radars on top ; if i had to guess , i'd say this is an anti-submarine aeroplane , pressed into this job , because , perhaps , sub detection has become redundant , since the main sub threat (russia) is considered bought ,or less important than the weather control initiative that i think is the main thrust of the contrail phenomenon , at least , in these parts
i've got photos of some very unusual jets in the past week in a little while , when the pressure of work lightens a bit , i'm going to learn how to post pics .

Hi smashdracs
I'll have a look on Flight Explorer in the next day or so when I get a chance.
My initial thoughts are that it's a large American transport aircraft or tanker. I remember last year seeing these on Flight Explorer around this time as they start going to Antarctica. They flew into Christchurch and then a few days later travel on to the ice. |

i remember reading months ago, that the neocons in the pentagon had ordered 500 more jets from boeing , i think boeing was mentioned. the inference was that they were intended for dedicated chem spraying
has anyone else got this message , or anything to add?

Hi smashdracs,
I haven't been able to find much about this.
I have looked for any information on the flights to Antarctica that might relate to this image but can not find anything concrete.
I have been looking on Flight Explorer daily with out seeing anything different.
We have been told (and it is in the information on Flight Explorers web site) that military flights are not shown, however I have seen aircraft that are coming down to Christchurch and then onto Antarctica show up on Flight Explorer so we do seem to see some military flights. |

In regard to what aircraft this might be it is hard to say.
When you blow the image up it looks quite blocky so it makes identification a bit of a guess.
To me it looks like it is has 4 engines and it may also have a T tail section. That would be consistent with a C17 cargo aircraft .
Similar to the ones here
http://www.mysteriousnewzealand.com/resources/nzflightvectors/
But thats a bit of a guess.
I can't go back in time to see what was there so I have been watching F Exp to see what comes up.
Guess what I have just captured a Flight to Antartica.
I will post picture later.
Unfortunately there is not enough info displayed to tell us what aircraft type it is though. |

Oh, thats a shame we cant get a definite ID on the craft.
I may have to look at getting flight explorer myself as I will be using broadband from next week. Will make things easier at this end.... |

OK, I think it is definately one of these.

So that rules out any attachment or pod on the craft I guess. US Military plane then... |

Yes for F Exp broadband is a must.
When/if you get it let me know as there is a bit of tweaking to get it to show only the jet commercial traffic.
You got my mobile (maybe we can have a chat over a weekend day over the phone) and I can help you get it setup. |

Hi smashdracs
I’ve spotted an article from a blog on Stuff by Mike Scott who did a 10 day visit to Antarctica and reported on his blog called Ice Pix.
It shows a photograph of the plane he went down in on 14 November 2007 which is a US Airforce C17 Globemaster. This is a few days before the one you have photographed above. Here is the link:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/blogs/icepix/2007/11/14/here-on-this-frozen-planet/
Could be the type of plane you saw… |
