There are three phone jacks in my flat. All 3 work fine except the main one I use for the phone and my dialup internet has been doing wierd things for a while ie: phone plays up and internet has gremlins etc (to be rather general).
My dialup has been broadcasting tones through the little fm stereo next to the line lately which struck me as rather bizarre so this morning I decided to do a wee investigation inside the ph jacks to see if anything was amiss.
Here are the pics from inside the 3 phone jacks.
This one is in the bedroom and works but never gets used...
Nothing amiss in that one...
Then there is the first of 2 jacks in my lounge, it looks like this inside...
That above pic is a wee bit blurry but you get the idea...
And finally, the 3rd phone jack in the house and the one our phone and internet plugs into.
As you can see it is rather busy inside that 3rd phone jack!!!
Can anyone identify what all those extra goodies are in my phonejack?
A rational explaination would put my mind at ease. I hate being paranoid. |

yip, those are connectors used by electricians and telecomunication contractors. Nothing to worry about there buddy.
They bassically just crimp wires together. |

Good.
I thought that would have to be a dumb way of putting a phoneline under surveillance. I should have run with that...
Not really knowing a lot about wiring and stuff I thought it good to ask before heading down to the police station for an explaination. |

Aye Blossom,
They are indeed cable crimps. The Yellow objects with numbers on them are more than likely filter capacitors, to either filter 50hz hum of the lines or a load balancing network due to a series of phone sockets sharing the same connection. If the powers that be want to monitor your communications via phone / internet / mobile phone, they need only go as far as the local exchange / switch or your ISP in the case of the internet . This can be done remotely and without the knowledge / consent of your service provider.
In house probably can be bugged for conversation monitoring via traditional methods ie radio frequency bugs, these should be easy too find with your 'zap checker' smash. Turn off the mains supply in the house (assuming the bug will have its own power source) to avoid spurious response in the detector, put some music on via a battery operated device to trigger any VOX (voice activated relay) and away you go feeling like agent 88.
As for your stereo picking up modem tones, this could be happening inductively via the phone line being to close to the radio and the magnetic field produced by the pulsed tones through the phone line coupling into your antenna and then on to be demodulated and heard through the speaker. Try to reproduce the effect at will. |
