Comments:

I can't see airlines voluntarily taking this up in a big way. A profitable airline wouldn't want to have it's fleet idle for half of the time. The small consolation would be that they wouldn't be scheduling so many international flights into Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch between 4am and 8am, the most common time of day for fog, as they do now.

This is not a recent item, but there may be a pickup on it as measures to mitigate climate change (global warming) are sought which do not involve actually reducing CO2 emissions. I think reducing CO2 emissions globally is going to be very difficult (because of the political, economic and social implications), and I doubt that even if CO2 emissions reductions are achieved on a global scale, the rise in global CO2 concentration will be significantly halted.
