Popo Bawa is the name of a nasty, raping, bat-like monster feared by many people in Tanzania. From Reuter's:

I was plagued with the pressing down attacks as a kid and teen. I have experienced the sexual attacks on 6 occasions.
It stopped about 5 years ago.

My experience of it was like this...

Sometimes I could hear the entity or entities coming before they got to me.
Total paralysis happened when they were on top of me, I couldnt scream or speak.
One time 3 beings entered my room, they were speaking in tounges and I could see them with my eyes shut. I had first heard what I thought was the sound of a jet approaching overhead, it got louder and louder and I then thought it must be a very large truck right outside the house (odd at 2-3am) as the sound got louder I realised it wasnt a jet or truck and then I heard the voices. I remember being lifted off my bed by them and they told me they were taking me away. It was terrifying, and I tried to fight, eventually they let go and I fell about 4 feet back onto the bed with a thump.

Other times I would simply wake up and realise something was on top of me and an exhausting wrestling would ensue until I got the thing off me.
At one point I experienced it 4 nights in a row and didnt sleep for a fortnight from fear.

There were other similar events.....

that's major , especially the fortnight without sleep . i've had a few of these , but i'm not game to talk in public

i had a girlfriend who was into Mahikari , which is a Japanese organisation , with a graded set of initiations , a power pendant that they wear , and they explain attaching spirits (i think these are what Deano was referring to , the entities that feed off negative emotion ), as the spirits of our ancestors , that have not moved on to where they should go after death , and the Mahikari business is to help them find that place . that's as i understand it

then there is the explanation , which prevails in shamanistic societies , that the pressing attacks are the work of sorcerers

aliens , i wonder if this is a new variant , or has it been around for a long time? certainly , there was a long tradition of abductions and changelings (substituted babies ) with the culprits labeled fairies , little people , who lived underground

i knew a Maori woman in Darwin , who ran a little group i went along to , and who said the Mahikari people were ineffectual ,and used to bring their problem cases to her , to fix . This lady had a visit from her sister , one time , who lived in Northland , and together they volunteered to help me out . they sat with eyes closed for 15 minutes , i just sat and watched , then when i left , i felt as light as air , it didn't seem my feet were touching the ground . the feeling didn't last long , but that was my fault . those two were a power , in the inner world

A book I have just recently finished reading called 'the lucid veiw' from unlimited press has been interesting. It attempts to condense some interpretations of these 'visions / encounters / attacks'. Perhaps with our individual awareness / perception we could govern to some extent the phenomonen. Once we may have been told or got a meme or inkling of something, it has seated itself in our conciousness. Wether we believe it or not it grows in 'realisim'. Maybe our souls struggling through school here give rise to, via our mind's, a sort of 'exhaust' formed from emotional / belief states which helps create our physical/material future?.
Some tribal shamans could exert great pressure on people, even to the point of killing them from a distance, via imprinted beliefs. Visiting peoples from a different culture (no doubt with their own black magicians) were unaffected by these 'assaults'.
Mass media themes tooled with historical occurences / literature form and mould us, place us in the arena????. Some people are very sensitive to these expressions to a point of physically becoming aware of these 'entities'...

good post , secondfield , there's truth i'm sure , in the idea that the forms of these things , as we perceive them , are conditiioned by our minds , with their heavy components of conditioning and expectations

not only our personal conditioning . there are national and ethnic "zeitgeists" -----(spirit of the times and the age) and other sources of conditioning , whose sources are presently lost in the mists of time , and difficult to understand even if we could see them clearly , which we probably never will .

there is also the deliberate channeling of our attention , through Madison Avenue and Hollywood , which are designed for the selfish advancement of (in my opinion ), non-human powers , and the content of this propaganda is hugely corrosive to harmony in the human sphere

just to pick a couple of major victories in the recent history of these corrosive attacks :

we now thoroughly believe we can't do without police forces and a big standing army . a few hundred years ago , the Tudor kings ran the british isles , successfully , with no police force , and no standing army . the big difference between those times and ours? every village had common land

thirty years ago , we all basically understood , that the universe had popped into existence for no particular reason , with with some sort of stupendiferous fart , as if that was some self-evident , self-realising truth next on the list of self-evident explanations , was the idea , underpinning the imperial initiatives of every protestant european power, that the crown of all creation was the refined english country gentleman , the splendid teutonic burgher ,etc . etc. , who evolved from a fortuitous mixture of lightning , sunlight , slime and blind chance .

a lot of us now reject these underlying assumptions, but the power of these ideas has incredible inertia, even within those of us who think we are all grown out of them

back to the astral world , one of the ideas by which untold thousands of psychologists make a luxurious living (note :make ,not earn) is the one that says our inner world arises from chemico-electric transactions in the physical world . this , in reality , is exactly arse-about-face to the true state of affairs

while there is absolutely no doubt that the forms we experience are heavily influenced by our own wiring , the power and purpose of what comes through from the spirit world is prior , greater by a huge factor , smarter and more creative than us

the smarter it is , it may be easily supposed , the more opaque its purposes may be to little old us .
