New Zealand Bans Forms of Political Satire
I found this story hard to believe when I first read it, but the government of New Zealand, land of hobbit films and sheep, last month banned broadcasters from using images captured inside parliament to "satirise, ridicule or denigrate MPs," The New Zealand Herald reports.
Apparently, Kiwi politicians were upset at the media for broadcasting images of government ministers appearing to sleep at their desks or making rude gestures. But it wasn't just members of the governing party who were saying "no humor allowed" -- only six members of the 121-seat parliament voted against the measure.
This seems like one of those things that politicians do because they can but often come to regret mightily later.
Not only is the move unpopular with the people of New Zealand (in a recent poll, 71 percent said they opposed the ban), but it probably won't help the country's image in the larger world. I can just imagine what the Australians (who make fun of Kiwis endlessly anyway) will do with it -- or someone like Jon Stewart or those great British comedy shows.
Some New Zealand television networks have said they won't comply with the ban, which took effect Monday. Now, Prime Minister Helen Clark's government is "in talks" with the media about changing parts of it. Does that mean we'll hear reports of furious backpedaling and flimsy rationalizations coming from Wellington any day now?

Could be some truth there.

What amazed me , fifteen years ago, was to learn that my little credit union , in Tasmania , which is a non-profit organisation , and is bound by its charter never to lend more than it has in assets ,
wait for it.........
by "Australian" fiscal "law" , is required to be underwritten by a big offshore bank , in this case Chase Manhatten , and to abide by the guidelines set down by this bank . In other words , the little community-friendly credit union, can't even set the penalty for a bounced cheque , for example . So if you bounce a cheque , it sets you back about $50 and as well ,you need a second mortgage to pay off your monthly charges , even without any bounced cheques
for therapy , when it gets too much , all those Australians making fun of New Zealanders , have a listen to John Clark , he is so funny .
Speaking of rigged elections , seems to be a rash of it around , has anyone else thought it peculiar , that every Australian state has a labour government , but the liberals are very strong in Canberra? doesn't make much difference , anyway , they all have their noses in the same trough , and their necks in the same noose , for that matter .
As for New Zealand being a training ground , same used to apply here , but i think the NWO is already extremely good at what it does . Giving credit where credit's due , we haven't had a bad depression in a while , have we?
Just another little thing to watch out for.........a week ago i heard on the news that our beloved leaders have decided that bike gangs are bad and naughty, and they are trying to think of a way to make it illegal to belong to one (or more , presumably) without trampling on our civil liberties (PSSST DON'T TELL ANYONE , IT'S AN ELECTION YEAR)
apparently this feeling developed , after fifty years of friendly co-existence (after all ,our politicians owe a sizeable part of their income to massive taxes on tobacco , alcohol and gambling) , because the bike gangs suddenly seem to be getting really really wealthy . and here i thought it was supposed to be approved of , and thoroughly admirable , to get stinking , filthy rich! So what would i know??
it would be interesting to hear if any similar initiative starts to emerge across the Tasman
When Helen bought those 100 canadian troop carriers , to do peacekeeping work overseas , i thought ,there's some dots to join there
