I remember reading a little something about suntan lotion or the ingredants of suntan lotion may actually cause skin cancer and not the sun it's self.

I've lost the link and can't find it, but does anyone else have any input on this?

Yes, I have heard that and read some information. In fact I read an article recently that stated that things have possibly gone too far regarding sun exposure with people trying to avoid it.....that exposure to sun is necessary so that we can create vitamin D, essential for our health. (Nothing new here) The recommendation was 10 minutes a day. Not very much in my opinion.

Also having seen a documentary about the chemicals in skin products and cosmetics and how they are absorbed into our bodies, (not to our benefit), I have been using more natural products for a while.

I read a recommendation somewhere just to apply pure aloe vera before going out into the sun. I have felt myself for a long time that people are more suseptible to skin cancer these days because of a poor immune system or health. But it's just not one thing either, i.e. there are many factors contributing to why people get illnesses.

Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can find Hawaiian/coconut oil with a low SPS. I bought some recently and was very happy with how it performed even after working in the sun for 6-7 hours.

I have switched back to the Hawian tropic brand also, What I have noticed with the 30spf sun lotions is the skin on my hands gets swollen soon after I apply it.....not so good i thought.

I have seen a few posters around recommending people spend some time in the sun to prevent bone diease, depression etc etc

maybe suntan lotion is just like a type of panadol for the skin or something

Hi satanzhand

I've just come across this article which has some relevant information about this topic:

Quote:
Bad but widely accepted advice just might be killing you slowly if you buy into what they say about the dangers of our native sun.
They want you to avoid sunshine... slather on chemical sunscreen if you go outside... stay indoors during peak sun hours... wear long-sleeved shirts and sunglasses even when it's not sunny... and strive to cut your sun exposure to none.
Abide by these instructions and it could spell disaster for your health. By following their "no safe level of sun exposure" rule, you'll put yourself at higher risk for deadly cancers, heart disease and more.
It's time to set the record straight. Real science supports more, not less, sun exposure. If you know how to safely take advantage of the sun, you'll live a happier, longer life for it. You'll see how to enjoy the warm, golden, mood-lifting rays of the sun once again.

The True Crisis is a Deficiency of Vitamin D
When the sun's rays strike your skin, an amazing hormonal reaction begins. Your skin absorbs the light and uses it to make vitamin D3. Think of it as the human version of photosynthesis.
Next your liver and kidneys metabolize the vitamin D3 into an active hormone called 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. It's quite a mouthful, but this substance plays an important role in almost every system of your body. For example:

a.. Vitamin D helps build healthy bones. Vitamin D deficiencies contribute to osteoporosis, other bone-weakening conditions, and unhealthy teeth.

b.. Vitamin D helps keep the immune system tuned. Vitamin D deficiencies promote a number of painful autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

c.. Vitamin D helps keep your circulatory system healthy. People with heart disease commonly have a vitamin D deficiency.

there have been articles about this popping up recently and its true. The cancer society and its cronies have pushed really hard for people to use suntan lotion, but do we even know whats in it. usually its aluminium and titanium thats part of the formula plus a huge cocktail of petrochemicals. Sun tan lotion is a total scam in my opinion. I havnt used suntan lotion in over 10 years, after reading the ingredients one day it became obvious that it would do more harm than good. Which reminds me check out the ingredients on bug sprays too, they are really dangerous.
I say everything in moderation, including the sun, we need the sun to survive, we cant do without it, but it should be common sense about how long we spend in the sun per day... its crazy to cover ourselves with some kind chemical cocktail to block the sun as a temporary fix, its poor science much like many quick fixes in this world. You block the suns rays and at the same time introduce a dozen or so new chemicals onto your skin which is then absorbed and builds up in the organs to cause problems in the long run that may actually help produce skin cancer by creating areas of the body that become clogged and cannot fanction as normal.
Aloe vera mixed with tea-tree oil makes an excellent sunscreen and requires no chemicals to be added to it. This is a safe option if u must spend too much time in the sun. What amazes me is people who assume sunscreen is safe otherwise it wouldnt be on the market, bollocks! Its sold as an essential part of summer for profits... its annother way to sell us chemicals that harm our health in the guise of helping our health but doing the opposite. There is never a good time to put aluminium into our bodies, but we do via deodorants, cosmetics, sunscreen and vaccinations... yet aluminium is toxic to the human body in any form... go figure?
