Proposed restrictions on direct to public advertising of pharmaceuticals has National's Tony Ryall worried that the pharmaceutical companies may lose out if prevented from peddling their drugs to vulnerable consumers.
I'm sure that the industry was doing just fine before they were allowed primetime media access to potential customers...
And something I didn't know until I read the article - apart from the USA, New Zealand is the only other developed country in the world that allows direct marketing of prescription drugs to consumers!! How in the hell did it come to that?
It's an interesting one in light of what's happening with the proposed Trans-Tasman Therapeutic Goods Agency, which if passed into legislation would see control of NZ's natural health products, pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices given to the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia.
What really is going on? Will preventing the advertising as stated in the article above is like making doubly sure the public don't have choice? And how will people find out what the options are and more importantly who is going to dish the pharmaceuticals out?
