I found the following article in Stuff this morning. I can only imagine that this sort of tactic is going to create more, bigger and harder to overcome problems for these kids later on down the track as they struggle to overcome feelings of shame, guilt and powerlessness. I would have thought that the traditional media is doing an effective enough job of exposing kids to this fear by constantly flaunting unattainable models of aspiration before them in advertisements, music videos etc...

Not that I advocate the opposite tactic where false self esteem is encouraged and children are prevented from the 'pain' of winning and losing by everyone receiving a prize, or praised up artificially no matter what their achievements - studies are now beginning to show that children who are raised with this tradition come to have unrealistic expectations of the world and can become arrogant and self absorbed.

However, while fear in some instances can be a powerful motivator, it's not an effective long term motivator... I think a lot of children are now trapped in an impossible prison - on the one hand chained to technology and to things of an inherently superficial nature and on the other being blamed for their sedentary lifestyles, eating habits and out of balance values systems - many of which are initially funded and condoned by their parents.

Can anyone suggest a creative way of tackling this issue?

Fear factor tactics for overweight children

A "fear factor" surrounding overweight children is seeing them hooked up to pedometers, with their television viewing time decided based on their physical exercise levels.

Other schoolchildren are being made to run "fat laps" around school fields, or have the potato confiscated from their potato-top pies in a bid to battle the bulge.

A visiting Australian professor says the extreme measures have been employed in her home country – but similar "fear factor" tactics are now being used in New Zealand, where overweight kids are being brainwashed about their size and eating habits.

"The messages are constantly 'Watch what you eat or you'll get fat', not food is pleasurable and perhaps we need to be more careful about it. There's constantly the fear factor," said University of Wollongong faculty of education professor Jan Wright.

Speaking to a Wellington physical education, activity and health congress yesterday, Professor Wright said some parents made their children sandwiches with one white and one brown slice of bread.

Some schools rated pupils' lunchboxes and measured children's weight in class.

Scare tactics were used to frighten children into eating healthy foods and fat kids could be singled out for mandatory exercise.

Good topic,
I have two little kids 5 yrs and 3 yrs, they love junk food in general.
My five year old has what seems no control when it comes to junk food.
My three year old has control for most junk except a few mainly soft drinks.
My wife and I dont stock any junk food or softdrinks in the house, our kids are allowed to all they want in regards to fruit and vege, they are limited on breads.
what we repeat to our kids when they do want junk is that its a sometimes food and it is unhealth! we sometimes explain why this seems to work fine for now.
Kids and people are to fat probably because most of us are programmed that excess is good and we all strive for it in one form or other! Some people are just choicing that excess item to be food in most cases. Theres only two ways to change this either change the programming( which will take atleast one generation or so) or try to increase peoples intelligence the later maybe easier.
Things aren't that complicated as far as being health goes

To many calories in means excess fuel for energy
this excess has to burned off through exercise(movement) or it will be stored as fat!

Rule1 Dont eat to much

If nature didn't make it that way its probably not much good for you maybe even kill you (slowly or fast)

Rule2 Crap in Crap out

If you dont stay active you wont be able to be active

Rule3 Use or lose it

Make sure what you are eating is getting to your body

Rule4 Clean out your insides regularly

There are no such things as BIG boned people, people with gland problems, there are only people eating to much or people eating reasonable....the excuss "I hardly eat anything its my glands make this way" is bull if it had any truth there would be pockets of huge fat people in with all the straving of the world or the the odd fat person would have come out of the concentration camps even, I have never seen any!

Also worth noting is most overweight people tend have malnutrition, which says instantly they eat crap!

the question of why people chose to eat to much most of the time comes down to control they want to have control over some part of there lives( the same is often said of anorexia etc).

We could also just add more flouride into the water ( increase our state indorsed medication) haha
