Now this is totally outrageous and just downright creepy. Britain has introduced 'talking surveillance cameras' that identify citizens behaving unacceptably and telling them to stop. One Middlesborough resident said:
Quote:
'It's quite scary to realise that your every move could be monitored - it really is like Big Brother.
'But Middlesbrough does have a big problem with anti-social behaviour, so it is very reassuring.'
The system is being justified by its managers who say that the only people who don't welcome the cameras are offenders and that they have never had any requests to remove them.
The reprimanding cameras have been introduced not only as a crime deterrent but as a corrective system for anti-social behaviour.
Once again, I can hear the arguments: "If you have nothing to hide, there is no need to worry"...
Well everyone has the right to live and move within the world with dignity and having your every move monitored and any slip ups immediately castigated by nameless faceless mechanical wardens, is in my book, an unacceptable intrusion and a dangerous assault on the basic civil liberties of honest tax paying citizens. I almost feel that the phrase 'Big Brother' has been so messed with and over-used in recent times that it has lost its power and meaning to many people.
There are some very astute and succint reader responses at the end of the article:
Quote:
It's not about what the adults think. Consider this "generation zero" for the infants and toddlers who will grow up not knowing a time when the Government wasn't watching and correcting. Sad.

Orwell's 1984 was a dire warning to ward off the totalitrianism of public monitoring authorities. This camera/speaker system is not 'like' Big Brother, it 'is' Big Brother incarnate. Monitoring public behavior, except for emergency services, is completelty unaccepatable in any free society and should be received with outrage by responsible citizens. It's a slippery slope to dictatorship and reminicent of Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union. Don't let this situation prevail.
