RFID Chip IN CONSUMER LEVEL PRODUCT??
Two days ago I purchased an optical mouse from a large local retail store (name withheld awaiting reply to requests for information) While unpacking the container later, I noticed an unusual object attached to the interior cardboard packaging material directly behind the “barcode” seen in the first image.
The object casing is constructed of tough plastic, measures approx 45mm x 9mm x 2mm and is marked with the letters “DR”.
Using a scalpel I carefully cut away the top of the plastic casing which revealed two thin aluminium foils.
After further dissection another smaller more robust (thicker) foil was located in a separate sealed clear plastic envelope compartment.
I have contacted the manufacturer of the item and several other people requesting an explanation as to the nature and purpose of this object.
I suspect this is some form of RFID chip and would appreciate your opinions.

We recently purchased a mini SD card for a Pocket PC device. The instruction/guarantee sheet had the same thing stuck to it, including the DR designation and above that, a slightly raised adhesive panel also stuck to the sheet. I soaked this panel off to find a slimline circuit board beneath it. I took a photo of the instruction sheet at the time (just a crappy phone photo I'm afraid):
I can't remember now, whether I saved the soaked off circuit board or not. If I find it, I'll photograph and post it. I was interested to see if it looked like the RFID circuits with a resemblance to a swastika design - it didn't...
I have seen the aluminium foils before in tagged goods from our local mad butcher. They have an anti-theft system in this particular store and scan all items at the time of purchase to 'de-activate' them.
I did a bit of a Google image search and came up with this site (unfortunately a foreign language site), also illustrating the DR labelled objects - it would seem that they are some kind of RFID or security device...
Indeed the above is an Ultra Max Electronic Article Surveillance tag (Anti Theft tag). The DR means Dual Resonating, this particular model has no memory to speak of and basically only has on "On" - "Off" (deactivation) mode.
The manufacturers of this tag also produce RFID tags and labels.

Just found this article in the news this morning.
This technology just seems to be getting more and more invasive.

The Way to RFID Smart Pants
People have mixed feelings about RFID technology, but not I. I'm convinced that RFID and its offshoot cousin, near-field communications (NFC)—a short-range wireless connectivity technology—are within four centimeters of changing our lives.
Recently I met with Inside Contactless, a Provence, France–based company that designs chips that go in contactless smart cards, PCs, and consumer electronics devices. This is not future technology. There are credit cards from Chase, Wells Fargo, and other banks already have these chips and RFID technology embedded within them. They let consumers "blink" at RFID readers. In other words, the embedded technology replaces the magnetic strip on most credit cards and lets consumers wave the card at an RFID reader to make purchases. No swiping necessary.
There is more in the article about how these devices work with mobile phones to virtually treat users as retail zombies... It really seems kinda gross to me.
