Reuters have recently withdrawn photographs from a lebanese photographer from its database after a review showed that two of his photographs of the conflict between Israel and Hizbollah had been digitally altered. The photos in question had been 'photoshopped' to include more dark smoke in one image of the aftermath of an Israeli air strike and more flares being dropped by an Israeli F-16 fighter in another.
The result is unsurprising however, as the photoshopped smoke looked decidedly unconvincing showing distinct repetitive patterns commonly resulting from unskilled use of cloning tools in popular digital editing software...
What is surprising though, is that Reuters obviously didn't notice the doctoring in the photographs until responses from news web sites and blogs drew attention to it.
Unfortunately these days, while the camera doesn't lie, digital editing software can and does. Mysterious NZ advises anyone documenting important events or observations with a desire for the resulting photographs to represent proof of something, to shoot in RAW format.
