Mystery surrounds a number of strange sightings in the Manawatu skies last night.
Several people have contacted Newstalk ZB claiming to have spotted a UFO after seeing lights darting around at speed.
One informant lives in Feilding and says he saw lights doing strange manoeuvres which seemed to violate the law of physics.
Police are at a loss to explain what the lights may have been.
The Wellington Observatory says while a possible explanation could be a bright star low on the horizon, that does not account for the strange movements the lights were making.
Staff at Palmerston North's control tower offered the strongest explanation saying a couple of air force planes were flying around the area before 8 PM.

There are strange objects flying in the skies to the west of me. I am pretty sure these objects are the ones laying down chemtrails. They are small dronelike aircraft from eye but pictures just dont seem to catch them at all ( always blurred or blotchy even at good resolution ). Recently there have been almost no sign of chemtrail activity ( a few days only within a 2 month period ). However these small aircraft are still there zipping from south to north and north to south sometimes heading towards each other leaving just a small ' signature ' contrail which disappears shortly. At one time I witnessed maybe 6 of them in one area to the northwest. This was spotted by my girlfriend.
I repeat they not large aircraft and there is definately something unusual about them. After some lengthy observations I have not witnessed any of these objects make any ' impossible ' maneuvers so my alien theory doesnt hold up at the moment. High speeds though, at times but also abnormal slow passes.
This news item says recent activity but I have not seen anything other than the odd airliner, cessna or piper planes for the past week. The unusual objects have dissapeared for the time being.
