Just a quick note, the sightings were by a couple of hunters who were out shooting ducks.
The event was last weekend (Will get you all the dates and times etc) the first sighting was of a strange light as they were driving from the Hutt area, it was a bright and very strange light. Later that morning they were in their mimi or whatever you call those things and a valley across the lake from them on the Rimutaka Ranges lit up as bright as day and apperently stayed that way for sometime. Ive been told they were both very taken by the event and one of them has given a full account of it to an associate of mine who is currently typing it all out in detail and plotting it all on a map.
I will post the full details of this interesting little event as soon as the report is handed to me.

UFO Sighting report 21-05-06

Time of sighting: 0500 – 0630 hrs
Duration: Approx 1 hr

Introduction: The witness and his companion were travelling to lake Wiarapa for a spot of duck shooting early Saturday morning when the sighting took place. Ross has had 30 years experience hunting and tramping the Rimutaka ranges. The route taken was out thru upper hutt, over the Rimutaka ranges and then proceeding thru featherston into the martinborough area ending at a maimai located near Kahutara, Lake Wairarapa. The conditions were clear at the time and no moon was visible.

Sighting details: The witnesses first spotted the object at between 5 and 530 am when driving thru Kaitoke and Plateau north of upper Hutt on the approach to the Rimutaka ranges. A Bright purple/bluish light about half the size of the moon which changed to yellow and then white was observed over the rimutaka ranges directly ahead of the witnesses. It appeared oval at first, and then appeared to become distorted. It appeared to have fuzzy edges at stages also. On the approach to the Rimutaka hills at one stage the object appeared to be close to them, almost over them until retreating back to its original position. It was less bright than a star with softer hues and appeared to glow. No electrical effects were noted nor was a smell or noise present. The visibility that morning was excellent with no wind present and an ambient temperature of 8 – 12deg Celsius. The object did not appear to flash at all and appeared to be @ 30-35 deg angle over the ranges. The object was in view for approx 20-25 minutes until the men drove over the Rimutaka ranges and down the other side toward Featherstone. At this stage they lost sight of the object due to the close proximity of hill ridgelines. (See map 1). Ross mentioned that the apparent size of the object was “substantial”.



The men continued on their way discussing what they had seen. Ross told me he has seen a similar thing occur on the west coast of the south island many years ago (no specific date given).

Upon arriving at the Maimai, located at the north eastern end of Lake Waiarapa the men busied themselves preparing for the mornings shooting. Once settled in the maimai the witnesses were facing a south westerly direction overlooking the lake waiting for any game birds that might show up. Shortly after 6pm, the sun had not yet risen, a glow was observed behind a hill some 12km distant (an estimate). This hill turned out to be called Maunganui (see map 2). Behind the hill was a flat plateau along western lake road. The men observed this whole area light up as if in daytime and the surrounding hills also. A slight glow was seen over Maunganui. It was not a flare as this would have been observed much higher in the sky. The duration of this was approx 10 minutes or so. The light remained constant before suddenly extinguishing leaving the area in semi-darkness again, before sunrise. Both men were left baffled by this observation. The area which was lit up is sparsely populated with only a few small farms in the area. No sound was heard during this event. I have yet to discuss this with any residents in the valley, although it is my intention to do so in the near future. Photographs of the area will also be taken in infra red and normal exposure film.
