I was hunting down the DoC track last week and as last light was approaching decided to go back to the carpark on the herbert forest road.
About halfway back up the hill I stopped because there was an animal very near by and it was growling at me.
The bush was very thick, I could not see into it at all really. The animal was in my opinion, not a dog. The sound emitted was too low and thick
I proceeded up the track a bit and stopped again for a breather. The same growl came at me then. I became a little bit more interested and moved about 100 m further up the hill. Sure enough , the creature had followed me up the hill and was still growling from a close range. This now was starting to make me worried and I chambered a round in my rifle. I started to go back up the track and as I went, the animal shadowed me, until I got near the top and it stopped.
I do not know what to make of this and would like to hear from other people who have heard of these things.
No, I couldnt see it at all. It was so close I could hear the saliva in its throat but didnt see a thing. It was very stealthy, I was walking slowly and listening hard and couldnt hear a thing as it was creeping along shadowing me. At one stage I backed up against a large tree and cocked my rifle and I didnt hear it again until I moved and stopped again. Any ideas?
