outside in our back section (facing north) were long strands very much like spider webs.. BUT, and this is where i get stumped.. some of the strands are 10 meters long, and are not spun like typical spider webs in intricate patterns. several of these strands were caught on our cherry tree and hooked 10 meters to the house. others are caught high up in our wattle tree and if you weren't looking for them, you'd never see them.
ok, conservative educated skepticism is the best approach. so, i have these following questions.. and if you read this betty (as you have had anomalous filaments on your property).. or anyone else who may have answers or commentary on the following:
1. are there any spiders in new zealand that would create web like strands in 10 meter lengths from tops of trees?
2. would/could these spiders create literally hundreds of strands jumping often great distances between objects (and chasms)?
3. are there any spiders that spin square/rectangular webs? (see below)
4. if there are no spiders or other insects that do this, are there any other natural phenomenon that could explain these webs?
strand observation:
1. extremely white and when reflecting sunlight, refract light providing prism (rainbow) effect coming off the strand.
2. extremely thin.
3. some strands have "fuzzy" bits tangled in.. almost looks like cotton wool (extremely light and not very dense)
4. some further close observation around the house, i've noticed "square" shaped web collections. these appear to be quite old with insects and other detritus in them.

Hi Hiero,
We could all talk about the nature of these filaments until the proverbial cows come home. :) There is only one way to ascertain the true nature of them and that is to have them analysed. It would be useful, of course, to get a photographic record of them in situ and if possible to have witnesses when they are 'harvested' who also would be willing to sign an affidavit. Sterile gloves, tweezers (or similar) and container would be also be a necessity. The container would ideally be sealed in front of the witnesses, then sealed in an envelope and posted to the lab in front of said witnesses. With this sort of approach critics would find it very difficult to debunk the results...

Another piece of advice would be to keep a small sample for safe keeping (or any other unknown physical findings). If the findings are part of a conspiracy the lab may "missplace it" or something dogee....yea taking loads of photos is a good idea...document it as much as possible and keep some (if possible)...PeAcE
