Food wrap linked to prostate cancer
by Jonathan Leake, Science Editor
A CHEMICAL used to make food wrapping and line tin cans could be the cause of surging prostate cancer rates in men, says a study.
Bisphenol A is widely used in the food industry to make polycarbonate drinks bottles and the resins used to line tin cans, even though it is known to leach into food and has long been suspected of disrupting human sex hormones.
The new research suggests the small but constant level of bisphenol A entering people’s diet has a particular impact on pregnant women, disastrously altering the development of unborn baby sons.
The chemical causes microscopic changes in the developing prostate gland but these are not apparent at birth. Instead, they show up years later when they lead to a range of prostate diseases, such as enlargement and cancer. The changes can also cause malformation of the urethra, the channel for urine.
In Britain, rates of the cancer have surged to about 27,000 new diagnoses and 10,000 deaths a year. It is now almost as big a killer as breast cancer in women.
Frederick vom Saal, professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri, who led the study, warns: “During foetal life small amounts of such oestrogenic chemicals could permanently disrupt cellular control systems and predispose the prostate to disease.”
In the study vom Saal and his colleagues fed tiny amounts of bisphenol A to pregnant mice.Another group of pregnant mice was fed similar amounts of ethinylestradiol, which is used in the contraceptive pill. The researchers wanted to examine whether similar damage to the prostate occurred when women taking the pill accidentally become pregnant.
The results showed that even tiny amounts of both hormones — far lower relative to body size than what humans are exposed to — could disrupt development of the prostate gland.
About 2.8m tons of bisphenol is produced every year worldwide and it has been used in babies’ drinks bottles and teats in addition to food packaging.
Roger Kirby, consultant urologist at St George’s hospital, London, said the new research could help explain at least some of the reasons for the surge in prostate cancer rates.
“We are seeing more prostate cancer, and are also seeing it in younger people. So clearly there could be some environmental factor,” he said.

I while ago I read a few studies that said plastics/food wrap have the a type of female hormone in them(estrogen which occurs in males two) this hormone goes by a few different names but it is in there. It causes balding, hair backs, pimples ,aggession , water retension, hunger, agravassion of prostate, high blood pressure, Gynotrophy(bitch tits) all the bad stuff that might be associated with taking something like Steroids(what ever the use might be)
. Now the hormone is not in a solid state in the plastic and is able to leech out into the food or liquids contained in it, this happens at a very high rate when the plastic is used to heat the food or liquid held in side, and then of course you eat/drink this stuff and it gets into you. This can also account inpart for the difference in taste when you drink liquids from held in glass bottle( milk, water, soft drinks etc).
It should be noted that once the prostate gland is stimulated by this hormone or other substance it is hard to keep under control from that point on and is easily upset. Other things such as caffeine, speed, some asthama drugs(class 2 beta agoinst) will erroitate the gland also.
This information was gathered some 15 years ago by myself while I lived in the US. And I have noticed an up swing in the amount of prostate cancer in males and the drop sperm rates since the use of plastic has become common place.

I'd never heard of this expression, so went to do a bit of research - I think you mean 'Gynecomastia '

Interesting. Something I have noticed with the increased use of plastic - some shops absolutely reek of plastic odours. I have noticed that the Warehouse is particularly so. As soon as you enter, the smell of plastic (that distincitve petrol-like smell) is so strong it almost feels like a health hazard being in there :)

There is also a problem with the volume of drug substances entering the drinking water systems, due to birth control pills, pharmaceuticals etc being flushed down toilets and drains - both through the flushing away of unwanted medications and through urine and excrement. Apparently, water treatment plants are not designed to remove them...

Yeah your totally correct, I was think of two things getting them confused it will also cause the Gynotrophy which is shrinking of the testes.
The smell of plastic is rather yukkie, I wonder if there is a high rate of illness in work places like the warehouse and the plastic box??
It's all real just more reason to eat natural wholefoods and raising more questions about why it seems like goverments and big business are trying to kill us all off!! and make a buck while doing it.
I personally try to keep my foods in either glass or clay containers although it is very hard to avoid plastics

It's amazing how history tends to repeat itself. Affluent and populous societies tend to always poison themselves by some means or another. The ancient Romans, for example, suffered a large incidence of sterility due to lead and mercury poisoning, scalding hot baths and probably alcohol poisoning. And it wasn't because they were ignorant of the dangers either, the dangers of lead and mercury to health and life were well known to the educated. A substance containing lead was used for inducing abortions and a well-known contraceptive method was to smear the mouth of the uterus with white lead. This and metallic mercury were also both widely used as cosmetics.
The impact on fertility through ingestion of these poisons has been attributed by some researchers to be a principle cause for the decline of the Roman empire as it mainly affected Rome’s leaders, the aristocracy.
As with today's society, substances that kill suddenly are avoided, things that kill slowly over a long period tend to be dismissed from the consciousness.
The French have a saying: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" - the more things change, the more they remain the same. It's a pity that History doesn’t seem to be a popular subject these days...
