last night at about 10:45 p.m., i popped out into the backyard to get a view of the full (or near full) moon. it was breathtaking! shining effervescently above a thin layer of altostratus, bringing out all the detail in the cloud. i also gazed at mars, which was just to the left, or west of the moon.
then i saw an object, about the same size and brightness as mars, proceed at what appeared a high rate of speed, yet at constant velocity. it started blinking, or pulsating ever so slightly. it was approaching from the south, over the port hills, to the north. this object then simply vanished (or its luminescence abruptly stopped) about ten seconds after i had initially seen it.
satellite? wouldn't think that there would be a satellite in a north-south orbit over new zealand? would presume most would be either geosynchronous or in a roughly southeast-northwest orbit so that australia would also be in its footprint.
space junk? meteor? not likely as previous meteors that i've witnessed have an acceleration component, then a quick "burn-out" flash as the object skips across the atmosphere. this object did not have this "signature" so to speak.
there are a number of possibilities for this object, but it was pretty interesting, especially as from this perspective, it passed directly in between mars and the moon.
you just need to put in your location: new zealand, then town, auckland, etc. the database then configures observations to your specific location!
i tried to find correlation of object witnessed to known objects. the iridium satellite flares would be stationary (geosynchronous telecommunication satellites). the other was the okean o rocket, but it did not match my observation: alt: 90 (almost directly above my head) azimuth, maybe 10 deg east of true north. so, even using this powerful tool, i have not been able to find it.. but, will look again.
:D ...
The heavens above website is very cool. I first heard of it when the Space Shuttle was docked to the ISS when we ahad a great view of a couple of passes last year. Its great that you can set your alarm on your watch , head outside and look at a man made object in space. Its a great chance to look at the stars and wait for the 'bogey' to appear... I'm really hoping to get a view of a ufo one of these days. I guess I'll just keep looking up to quote Azimuth...
Have seen the ISS pass over from south going north. Im pretty sure it had a kinda redish brown look and moved across the horizon within a couple of minutes. But they usually tell you in the paper when youll be able to view.
