Ive had a bit of a look around this site run by a professor from Victoria University here in Wellington.
It gives the data from the upper air weather balloons daily, which is something I havent seen before.

If you havent already seen the site....enjoy! |

Hi Smash,
| Quote: | | check out the "beam" of rain in the second image of the Auckland area in this link, Ive seen these on the wellington radar as well before... |
I don't know what this would mean. Perhaps it's some aberration on the image? There is nothing visible on the NOAA sat map for that time:

Yeah, its hard to say what that is....Ive seen something like that once before on the metservice rain radar.
Theoretically is is something in the air that is reflecting the radar... |

MetService has been publishing that data on their website since about 1996, (although, as raw textwhich isn't as useful as the graphs that Jim makes available on MetVUW -- the data on the MetVUW site is, in fact, pulled directly from MetService). |

| The "beam" is caused by the radar "looking" directly at the sun. This may happen around sunrise and sunset. If you check the azimuth of the sun at the radar image time you will find it is the same as the direction of the "beam". |

Your comment "isn't as useful " is somewhat of an understatement - it all looks like gibberish to me. :?
What could be extremely useful would be the availability of an accessible database of met-info for say the last 6-8 years or so with, in particular, upper tropospheric temperature and relative humidity measurements. Do you, or anybody else, know of one? |

It would appear that this particular mystery at least, is solved...
