So Im maybe a 3rd of the way through reading it...

""But let me be very clear tonight: on our present course, New Zealand will do little more than tread water in the area of Treaty settlements and race relations. For me, this, the original Orewa message, is very much in the category of unfinished business - business I intend to see dealt with in my time in politics.
"one year ago, also here at Orewa, I spoke about the tragic human waste in having 300,000 working-age adults on a benefit, and the need to put in place policies that require able-bodied beneficiaries to be in work or in training.
"Some people claimed I was simply trying to save money. Well, yes, any programme which costs the taxpayer $14 million per day - roughly $50 per week for every hard-working Kiwi - does need to be looked at carefully, and if we can find ways of reducing the cost to taxpayers we should do so.
"But my main motivation was finding ways to free one New Zealander in eight - 300,000 working age adults and their quarter of a million children - from a demoralizing, indeed dehumanizing, dependency of prolonged reliance on taxpayer handouts. I do not accept that we help able-bodied people by letting them help themselves to a benefit indefinitely. We must actively encourage and help people out of dependency." Don Brash.

The first thing that rang in my head was the figures given regarding welfare. If thats accurate, that is bad. That then got me thinking, 2 years ago I was on a benefit. The office I was zoned to was in a lower class wellington area next to my suburb. On the occasions I had to report to the WINZ office it was always busy and packed with people waiting. Several things struck me on those visits, firstly I was usually the only European waiting, and secondly there were few Maori recognisable in there either. The very large majority of those in need were obvious immigrants from Asia, The middle East and Africa.

Im probably starting to perhaps sound a little racist, racist I am not.
Im merely wondering if I was just in an area prone to this, or if it is the same up and down the country.
Is our migrant and refugee population perhaps straining us in ways we arent alert to?
Has there been any effects in other areas such as crime by the artificial swelling of our population? I would say most certainly, especially in the area of drugs....just think meth.

So whilst typing this thread I flicked back to read the next few paragraphs of Dons speech and Don says....

""Eighteen months ago, though not at Orewa, I spoke about the need for improvements in law and order - about the need for more police, about the need to get tough with young lawbreakers to stop them choosing crime as a career, and about the need for more prisons and longer sentences for serious criminals.
"This speech, too, drew a response that, miraculously, these very items were high on the Government's agenda. But I haven't noticed, and I venture to suggest nor have many of you, any meaningful changes to the way in which serious crime is being tackled in this country.
"We still have too few police; too many of those police are focused on gathering revenue from speeding motorists; too many criminals are getting out of jail after serving only one-third of their sentence; and we still have the ridiculous situation where somebody who takes a weapon to defend a neighbour threatened by intruders ends up with a conviction, while the intruders end up with no conviction and name suppression, as happened in Taranaki late last year."

This prison system Don is fantasising about most certainly wont be affordable without first killing welfare to build run and maintain in order to have the spare cash.

Moving on to the economy an interesting little note...
"The pressing need for change has been concealed by very low interest rates internationally - and the associated strong growth in the global economy - by good growing weather down on the farm, and by the boost to the housing market from an influx of people after September 11. Those factors have allowed New Zealand businesses to prosper - but had nothing to do with any policies of the Labour Government."

I hadnt ever thought about Sept 11 and its effects on our economy regarding people racing back here and buying up property...Im not doubting it either.

Dons speech then rips into the economy.
My own personal opinion of Don Brash is that he is a skinny Muldoon with a better face and less mongrel.
It troubles me where Mr Brash came from before his miraculous accension to leader of the opposition party in our parliament. That move alone was somewhat "Politically Christ like"....

Im not even going to finish reading the rest of his speech. Its less troubling to look up at the clouds at the moment.

The economy is most certainly looking bad....I cant see National saving us. And the Government we have right now is just plain unusual to my perception and I wonder if it can last 3 years.

Thats my little rant about the Nats and Brash at Orewa. Thanks for reading.

Hi smash,

I fixed the link for you. In the posting window, if you mouseover the URL button (to the extreme right under the subject field), you'll see that it provides some examples of how to create the URL tag. The second example shows how to make text as a clickable link:

It seems to me that September 11th did have a significant impact on New Zealand in several ways. The rental market for example. Many ex-pats came back to New Zealand giving tenants notice in order to occupy their homes again. For a while, this put a real strain on the rental market in certain parts of the country, particularly here in Auckland.

The other thing that happened is that many ex-pats working overseas and earning good salaries came back looking to buy investment property.

:P heh heh - we've all done it!

Interesting about prisons. A lot of people cry out for more of them, but nobody wants one in their community. I think at times, it is a very difficult process to get public consent for proposed prisons...
