PMs Not Kept in Dark, says Spy Boss
The director of New Zealand's secretive foreign-intelligence agency has gone public in an unprecedented move to deny agents are spying on New Zealanders and serving United States interests.
Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) director Warren Tucker said his agency served the government of the day, and close relations with United States and British agencies did not compromise New Zealand's sovereignty.
Of course theyre spying on New Zealanders. Some of the communications being monitored are in the Pacific islands and quite a bit of that traffic is being sent from NZ.
Again the question what is the payoff for having the bases. The article says part of the bonus to NZ is we have a direct line of contact into the corridors of power in London and Washington. No loss there.. next.
Spy agency boss Warren Tucker should come clean and clearly state the benefits to New Zealand of being part of a United States led spying network, the Green party says.
Green Party MP Keith Locke today said that if Dr Tucker was so clear about the benefits, then he should share them with all New Zealanders.
"I d challenge him to make them public, because I think if you weighed it all up youd find there are more negatives than benefits"
Taking part in the network meant New Zealand was serving US foreign policy objectives, which were often quite different from our own.
