first thing to report, the ct activity has decreased significantly in canty since the end of spring. no more numerous sprays in front of cold fronts.
today, there is a cold front approaching canterbury from the southwest.
the front was directly over us as indicative of the satellite picture.. we had some scattered showers (light) huge southerly gusts, then all of a sudden the winds stop completely.. and a circle of blue opened up.. about 1 km in diameter.. there was a thick "persistent contrail" directly through this big blue hole. in the outer edges of the hole, there were "wavy" cirrus cloud signatures. this is the first time i've ever noticed a "persistent contrail" this late in the storm's procession.. always just before.. or 24-48 hours after. |

Hi Heiro,
Just to clarify your words...
| Quote: | | and a circle of blue opened up.. about 1 km in diameter.. there was a thick "persistent contrail" directly through this big blue hole. |
When you say the trail was going through the hole, was that over the top or through the cloud itself? Your comment reminded me of this photo below that I found at this web site:
http://www.weather-photography.com/photo.php?cat=clouds&id=d-041221-107
Makes you wonder how much activity occurs above the clouds that we don't see. There's some stunning photos of contrails on this site. However whether they are contrails, as he has named them, is up for debate.. |

hi carus,
great picture! exactly. what indeed is going on above the stratus?
there was low level nimbostratus cloud dissipating. above, the altocumulus (upper level support for the storm) was cleared in a circlular pattern. there were wavy lines in the higher cirrus clouds surrounding the circle. the trail went right through (or slightly above) this hole. |

Thanks for clarifying that Hiero.
We had rain here in Auckland from evening yesterday and through the day today. I showed my picture of the circular PT from yesterday to a work colleague. He reckons he sees trails from time to time and talked about seeing them, or particular cloud formations like long bands before rain. I wasn't sure about what he was describing but he said he would point it out to me sometime. It will be interesting to see what it is he's looking at that he considers an indicator of rain. |

Could be cirrus cloud he is describing! Cirrus and altocumulus generally precedes a warm front which brings rain.

Hi Azimuth,
Thanks I'll keep your suggestions in mind.
Heiro,
This picture referenced from the website of Fortune711 who has just come onto the forum looks like what you're talking about....

hi carus,
yes, that is a good find. the only difference between this picture and my observation was that there were higher altocumulus and cirrus clouds surrounding the blue sky hole, and at the edges of these were those pesky, ever present wavy line cloud patterns.
fwiw, we see these wavy patterns all the time down here. a few days ago in sumner, it was hot and humid.. no clouds except for a high "canopy" of thin moisture laden haze above the ocean (not chemtrail spew). within this upper-level haze were wavy, highly symmetrical lines spreading from the south to the north.
these lines through the atmosphere are mostly observed spreading from south to north.. as if there is some source to the south or southwest of canterbury that is creating them. again, it could be from anywhere is suppose, but that is the "prima facie" observation. |
