A very recent article from Scoop: :x What the HELL is going on here??!!
"Government Caught In Secret Deal on Terminator Genes
The government has been revealed to have made a deal that has set New Zealand against the rest of the world by supporting the introduction of Terminator Genes.
Earlier this week news leaked from Canada that a plan had been hatched by its representatives to overturn the de facto global moratorium on Terminator genes that are designed to render all seeds barren after the first generation. In leaked documents it was clear that Canada would block consensus if it couldn't win sufficient backing from the rest of the world.
Initially Canada was believed to working alone at the UN-backed convention in Bangkok- possibly as a front for Biotech interests in North America. But during the conference New Zealand and Australia were reported to have supported Canada in a move that will anger New Zealanders and threatens to undermine our standing in the international community...."

Is there some sort of pattern here?
What ARE we doing. The NZ government has shown a particularly disturbing and suspicious pattern of supporting dubious stances on the GE issue in recent years... Now this:
As the Herald article states "We have strong rules at our own borders but are seeking to deny that to the countries that cannot afford the kinds of testing regimes we have in place. It is a shameful stance."

There seems to be some blurring of terms being used in the Herald article.
Quote:
Dr Cullen said New Zealand would not support accidental inclusion of GE content as requiring that content to be listed on the shipment documentation, because such a provision could catch conventional agricultural shipments, even of crops produced to organic standards.
Ordinary crops would have to be labelled "may contain living, modified organisms" because of the remote possibility they might have come into contact with living, modified organisms, he said.
In the first paragraph, Dr Cullen speaks of information required in shipping documentation, in the second, it is of labelling requirements.
Information on shipping documentation could be a valuable heads-up to border control in all countries.
But requiring everything we export, including organic produce to have consumer labelling that warns of potential GE contamination would seem to me to be meaningless. What in this case sets it apart from something known to contain GE materials?
On the other hand... I want to know if the cooking oil on the supermarket shelf is made from GE crops from Brazil or USA or elsewhere, so I can exercise my choice as a consumer.
How about some good old investigation from the Herald to detail what the issues really are here!
