I heard National Radio say that the new New Zealand now website designed to woo ex-pats back home cost $850,000, so I thought I would check it out. Turns out the entire campaign (including the web site) cost $850,000, according the New Zealand Herald. Which is just as well, because I still really haven't been able to browse the site properly to see just how the Labour Department has chosen to represent the New Zealand of today.
It would be campaign money a lot better spent if the site was actually accessible to the average person. Does anyone else find this site interminably slow?
Launching the website and advertising campaign yesterday, Immigration Minister David Cunliffe said the main reason for the campaign was the labour and skill shortages.
Designers of government sponsored web sites being one of those shortages no doubt... :) Repeat after me: useability, useability, useability...
P.S. Decided to view the web site in Netscape (for which I don't have the Macromedia Flash Player installed) and the site popped up very snappily, with a replica site in good old fashioned html, no problem. Now all they had to do was to give the visitor a choice of the Flash or non-Flash version...
Its really slow and I'm on a really fast connection...
It must be all those Kiwi's (and everyone else for that matter) who want to get away from europe to a place where you can still speak out against things and not be detained for it...
Either that or the server's on a 56K dial-up to save costs..... :?
