New Zealanders will have to show a passport, birth certificate or other identification from next week to qualify for free care at the country's largest health board.
The first stages toward the introduction of a national identity card will undoubtedly be some form of entitlement scheme - no card, no services. Thereby paving the way to effectively force everyone, eventually and in one way or another, to possess the card. Naturally having to produce passports and birth certificates will be such a nuisance, an entitlement card would be so much more handy, don't you think?
The photo drivers' licenses are today's ID card - perhaps this would be a logical way to combine an entitlement scheme with an existing card? Two for the price of one. Throw in some biometric data and you have the ultimate all in one citizen ID...

Hi all,
This is a subject I feel pretty hot on too!
It is worth remembering that your current photo drivers licence carries a digital image which incorporates the ability to encode a wide range of personal information into it that can be read electronically, but not by human eye.
I remember at the time that photo drivers licences were introduced here, the arguments for a Polaroid type photo, to give greater privacy protection, were ignored or treated as paranoid.

it is a big worry, we have a few means of tracking us already.
Driver licence - With photo we already have survlience camera's in auckland and there is software already for facial recogntion how long before thats used here if its not already
Bank cards/eftpos cards - remove the cash from society and society losses control, its possible to profile you already using bank card usage!
What happens if some takes a dislike to what your doing and deciedes to cancel your bank card! how will you access your hard earned money to put food on your table, we have all had a little sample of this when the bank has taken out to much in there fees! or made an error and you cant with drawl any of your money..if you had to buy food you would starve.
just wait untill they bring in the automated tolling on the roads then they'll be able to track your spending and where you go! big brother is alreay here..
