Vehicle owners' personal information exploited

personal; private
information; knowledge
personal information; information about an identifiable individual,
exploit; turn to advantage; make use of for ones own ends

I found this press release from Sandra GOUDIE, The National Party MP and Consumer Affairs Spokesperson.

This is only one example of “our” private information being "data mined" by commercial organizations and goodness knows who else for nefarious purposes:

Vehicle owners' personal information exploited

Commercial use of confidential information supplied by the Government seriously jeopardises the privacy and personal security of registered vehicle owners, says National's Consumer Affairs spokeswoman, Sandra Goudie.

Ms Goudie is commenting on the commercial abuse of private consumer information available from the Motor Vehicle Register.

The information is available on the LTSA Motochek website where the details of up to 1000 registered vehicle owners can be obtained overnight. Such information can include phone numbers, email addresses and residential particulars.

More than 5.5 million queries were lodged with the register in last 12 months and 88% of these were from commercial customers.

"Data marketers who subscribe to Motochek are using sophisticated software that runs automated enquiries on a series of up to 1000 plate numbers, which are then requested from the database," says Ms Goudie.

"Data marketers are simply mining the details of consumers and in many cases they are on-selling the information to other commercial organisations."

Registered vehicle owners may request a confidential listing, but this requires owners to satisfy the registrar that the release of the information would prejudice their privacy or personal safety.

"Despite the fact that the Labour Government is aware of this commercial abuse nothing has been done to fix the problem.

"It is unacceptable that private information is being commercially exploited," says Ms Goudie.

Private citizens are charged $25 to perform a check on the LTSA Motocheck site. I’m not sure what organizations etc are charged, but with 5.5 million checks a year being made this would certainly equate to a tidy profit from our personal information.

So what commercial organizations are "data mining" our information and why??

Sandra GOUDIE, good on you for bringing this to our attention. Certainly beats kicking the crap out of a few acres of harmless mangroves eh.

I think there may be a number of government departments data mining and selling personal information. From memory when you apply for a private post office box, there is a tick box related to giving them permission to sell your particulars to other organisations (don't quote me on it though) Something I read recently rings a bell....Possibly Telecom is doing this also?

THE DEMISE OF THE “NO JUNK MAIL” SIGN

More than pure speculation I fear Mel.

I have it on good authority that NZ Post is going to sell names and street address (letterbox numbers) of unsuspecting citizens to advertising agencies etc for a tidy wee profit and to stave off competition.

This is a move to get around the increasing number of people displaying “NO JUNK MAIL” signs on their letterboxes.

If a piece of mail (including junk mail) has a name and street address on it, it is no longer considered to be junk mail and must be delivered, “JUNK MAIL” sign or not.

Just a licit way of having more unwanted crap forced upon us.

Yes. I suspect that those pesky telemarketers get our personal details from similar suspect sources, often asking for us by name...
