A timely article on Scoop. Anton Hughes makes an excellent point about the role of the police being to also protect our freedoms - something increasingly forgotten in places like the UK and the US.

Quote:
New Zealand - Assistant Commissioner Jon White, New Zealand's top counter-terror policeman has come out saying New Zealanders may need to debate at some stage the balance between lost personal freedoms and a more secure nation1 [1] . White seems to have forgotten that, according to George Bush, the terrorists attack because they “hate our freedom”. White also seems to have forgotten that the role of the police is to protect the people, this includes protecting their liberties...

Hmmm. I fear that if they do become government we could see more of the draconian law and order/policing style favoured by Australia and the US/UK.

The case of Scott Parkin is a good example. The American activist was labelled a 'threat to security' and detained in Australia without charge , no doubt because he protested in Sydney once against Dick Cheney's Halliburton company.

New Zealand already has a precedent for this kind of unlawful action in the Ahmed Zaoui case. Although I was heartened by the numbers of New Zealanders who stood by him and who turned out for his cause.

Under an overtly right wing government we are likely to see more of it and worse.
