What does it take?
| Quote: | EPA UNIONS CALL FOR NATIONWIDE MORATORIUM ON FLUORIDATION, CONGRESSIONAL HEARING ON ADVERSE EFFECTS, YOUTH CANCER COVER UP
WASHINGTON, DC, August 30, 2005 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Eleven EPA employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals of the Civil Service have called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country, and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. The unions acted following revelations of an apparent cover-up of evidence from Harvard School of Dental Medicine linking fluoridation with elevated risk of a fatal bone cancer in young boys... |

In an interesting little incident on TV One's coverage of the election on Saturday night, Hugh Sunday and Jeremy Wells were interviewing some locals in a Greymouth pub. One guy (some sort of official from memory) happened to mention the current fluoride debate down there. He said 'we've got this fluoride thing on at the moment' (or words to that effect). He said he was against their adding fluoride to the Greymouth drinking water.
Wells and Sunday asked him what happened when you drink water with fluoride in it. The guy said "you die, that's what happens".
The thing that surprised me was the sense of mocking and ridicule they responded with. |

I saw that article as well
The ridicule was quite amazing. Looks like anything non mainstream is considered bollocks and is immediately rubbished, very sad that :x |

Hmmm. Except that "7000 environmental and public health professionals of the Civil Service" as per the above article about the EPA, in my opinion, now more than ever, places the issue firmly within mainstream considerations.
I think the other thing which is sad about the ridicule is that it signifies a sense of certainty about issues I don't think individuals can afford to have these days. Increasingly, the FDA and all manner of other authorising bodies are being found to have approved things that have questionable safety records or insufficient testing etc. For our own survival these days, we need to be questioning...
Good on the guy for getting his concerns mentioned on national television though :thumbsup |

| I just caught the tail end of the story on TV3's news tonight. I think they were saying that the West Coast bid to fluoridate their water had failed? |

Yes, that's right.
A spokesman for Dental Health wasn't too happy about it and said that people had been influenced by fear. Several pictures were shown of children's teeth with advanced tooth decay and talk of the poor dental health in the South Island, implying a necessity for fluoridated water. However the people's vote prevailed with something like 70% wanting fluoridation stopped. |

Great result :-) I also note that they said 60% of New Zealand's water supply is still fluoridated. |

| Yeah..it would be interesting to see a map with the areas shown in NZ. I thought it was lower than that. |
