The following appeared in an article on Stuff recently.
More mass medication...

Quote:
Universal salt iodisation may be introduced in New Zealand as low iodine levels are making New Zealanders susceptible to goitre and brain damage, experts say.

Iodine deficiency is the leading cause of preventable brain damage in children and also causes goitre and stunted growth.

The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) said iodised salt, once the nation's primary iodine source, is increasingly falling out of favour due to decreasing salt consumption and the popularity of rock and sea salts.

Colin, do you know any history about iodine? I've often wondered how people used to get the required intake when salt wasn't iodised.

If NZ soils are low in iodine is this a more recent thing as soils have been depleted of nutrients over the years? Would the spraying of DDT, which I heard about a few weeks ago was done extensively at one time, have contributed to this do you think?

Hi Carus,

I'm not sure I can answer your questions very well, but here goes...

The fortification of salt with potassium iodide (usually) has been practised - apparently safely - for about 70 years.

In China, about 450 million people live in iodine deficient areas and iodisation of salt has been compulsory there since 1995. Around the world, some 1.5 billion people live in iodine deficient areas.

Without iodine supplementation, endemic goitre can reach 20 per cent, particularly in children.

As far as I know, the deficiency of iodine in some soils is naturally occurring, is not directly related to cultivation and predates the use of dioxins such as DDT.

I'll qualify this by saying, that I'm only going on general knowledge, which can be very subject to 'urban legend' in these matters as you know. I haven't done any research into iodine fortification at all.

What did people do before the introduction of salt iodisation? I think there was simply a significantly greater incidence of goitre in the general population than we see today. I know, for example, that my grandmother had goitre in about 1942. This may well have been related to war-time diet restrictions - that's a fair-bit before my time so I don't really know if or how diet suffered here in New Zealand during WW2.

Since DDT was first registered for use in 1946, it is safe to say that this particular incidence of goitre could not have been caused by agricultural use of DDT.

My concern with what is revealed by the article I posted is the denial of choice for consumers and the compulsory nature of the mass-medication a-la fluoridation of the water supply.

Thanks Colin, that's good information.

I agree that it should be left to the individual to choose whether to use iodised salt or not. Universal salt iodisation is not freedom of choice and lends to the idea that people aren't going to take proper care of their health. However, as stated in the article on Stuff, education is important here and people should take iodine because they know it's good for their health.

Fortunately iodine can be put into foods in it's natural form. After reading some information about nanotechnology in the food chain, iodine doesn't sound so bad!

A booklet I read on Himalayan crystal salt, which has come onto the market recently, has an interesting note about iodine.

Quote:
Some people say that they must take table salt, as it is ‘iodised’, but again this is a error in perception, as the iodine is taken from the original unrefined salt or sea products (along with all the other minerals except sodium & chloride) and then re-injected back into the denuded salt, but this unnatural process does not do any good, as the iodine then turns into an inorganic, slow release poison!. Look at what is happening to our water, with a similar process using fluoride. All of the main 84 elements in nature are in ‘trace’ form in this unrefined Himalayan salt and this is the optimal way to have them.

Hi Carus,

Another benefit of that Himalayan salt, that I reckon is worthy of mention, is its superb flavour!

I was really struck by the depth of flavour and compared with 'standard' table salt, the absence of bitterness and astringency.

Its good stuff!

Is our goverment intent on killing us off before we collect our pensions or what?

The biggest reason we are difficent in Iodine is because we use along with other things chlorine in our water supply which displaces(pushs it out) Iodine in our bodies! flourine(flouride theres that stuff again) has the same etc also.

Table salt(the crap you get from the supermarket) is sodium chloride... hmmm
something is a miss here....

Ok so if you add iodine to table salt people will become more deficent in iodine...thats right bat man!

Now what i find bloody scary is this flouride was needed in large amounts during the testing (development) of the first atomic bomb(on going, also has industrial uses to) and then it turned up in our water, Now Iodine is a by product of the Nuclear industry and now they want to put it back into our salt!!!
(Yes i do under stand there are different types of iodine)

Note: Potassium Iodine is different again as it stops radio active iodine (from reactors) from entering the thyriod.

gezz wouldn't it be cheaper for all involved for the goverment just to advertise

"Eat good food" it'll fix what ale's ya"

These foods are rich in iodine and are available to the general public although dont tell them(haha, =( ); food from the ocean, radishes, asparagus, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, rhubarb, potatoes, peas, strawberries, mushrooms, lettuce, bananas, cabbage, egg yolk,Lugol's iodine, cod liver oil(grannies fav hmm maybe she new something), kelp tablets and onions

Its worth adding though they must be organic our you are wasting your time(GE food might also be a waste of time)!

although I think we should all lay down and say please Mrs Goverment/NWO kill us some more I need more love.

gezzz, Please everyone notice the trend!

Iodine in its good form is available in seawater!( disolved iodide )

if the soil is really depleted(not) why dont we spray seawater on it?

(To cheap and easy/ the water is so poluted it would kill everything)

Himalayan Salt Crystal sounds pretty good. Do you know of any retailers in NZ that sell it?
