Generally when you buy a digital camera, you also receive software to enable you to do some basic editing, including resizing images. If you do not have an image editing program, there are some very good free applications on the Internet with a surprising range of capabilities.

Using Irfanview to process Images

We recommend Irfanview for its simplicity, sophistication and, of course, its cost :D (Free!) Besides allowing you to view images in different modes, including slideshow mode, it will perform a whole range of tasks and will open a broad range of file formats, including image formats such as TIFF, JPG, DNG and RAW, but also music files, icons and video...

Read more on the website, and download from:
http://www.irfanview.com

Downloading and Installing:

The Download page will direct you to a list of servers hosting the file. Depending on the download location, you may need to choose your Operating System, such as Windows XP.

Download the file and save it to your hard drive in a place you'll be able to remember. Although these download locations are considered to be very trustworthy, it pays to get into the habit of running a virus check on anything you download from the net. Most of the time, it will be a case of right-clicking on the file and choosing 'Scan for Viruses' or 'Scan with Norton Antivirus' or similar.

Doubleclick on the file (it should be called something like: ivew397.exe) to run the installation and follow the instructions. Once installed it's now a simple process of using Irfanview to resize a file for upload to our gallery.

Opening and Resizing:

1.) Start Irfanview (if you chose to put a shortcut icon on your desktop during installation, it should be easy to find) and open the image you want to resize.

2.) From the menu at the top of the screen choose

Image>Resize/Resample...

3.) You'll see a dialog box with some options. On the right-hand panel, there are some handy presets to choose from. Either of the first two options are a good size for upload to the Mysterious New Zealand photo gallery. If you choose the presets, you won't need to click on any other options - they will become greyed out, except Preserve Aspect Ratio.

4.) Make sure you tick Preserve Aspect Ratio - this will ensure you keep the original proportions of your photo.

5.) Leave all the other options as they are and click OK.

6.) The example below shows the desirable settings:

7.) Choose

File>Save As...

Important: Always choose Save As - this will save your newly resized photo as a copy and leave your original large file intact.

8.) In the Save As... dialog box, navigate to where you want to save the file and give it a name. Choose JPG - JPEG Files as the file type from the Save as type: drop down menu.

9.) If the Show options dialog box is ticked, a pop up box with additional options will appear when you select the file type to be JPG. Move the quality slider up to maximum (best - 100) so that your image will retain the best clarity when viewed on the gallery. (Because you are resizing the image, choosing a higher quality setting won't increase the file size by a significant amount.) You should be able to leave the other settings as is.

Finally, click on Save and your file is now resized and ready to be uploaded to our Photo Gallery.
