Is the 'war on terror' hype and frenzy given to us through the media causing the death of innocent people? I think so.
The article referred to by Melody on the thread about the Terror Suspect shot dead at Point Blank Range - https://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=312that now reveals that the man gunned down was not wearing a thick bulky coat further demonstrates the misinformation we are been fed and accepting on a daily basis. Some people I work with had automatically condoned the UK Police's actions based on this 'fact', along with others no doubt.
Today I read an article on Stuff which tells of an Iraqi refugee who poured petrol over his body and set himself alight on July 15 in the carpark of the Mangere Refugee Centre but the death was not made public. Immigration officers had refused the man access to his wife and children who recently arrived in NZ after he had been separated from them for 7 years.
Quote:
However, his English was poor and he suffered from depression. A mental assessment in January this year found his despondency was caused by "being unable to speed up his family's repatriation" and that "his only pleasure was when he phoned his wife and children".
Rassoul's friend said when his family arrived on Saturday July 8 under the family resettlement programme there was a joyous reunion at the airport before they were taken back to the Mangere refugee centre while they were processed.
The friend said they spent the Sunday together but on Monday morning, after his wife met with an immigration official, Rassoul was given a trespass order and told his wife did not want to see him.
His friend told the Star- Times no explanation was offered for the notice but that Rassoul's 13-year-old daughter said the official had described him as a trouble-maker who had an indecent assault conviction in September for which he had served 200 hours community service. But his friend said Rassoul's wife had been aware of the charge for about nine months.
Days later, Rassoul was restrained from throwing himself in front of a car and was taken to a GP who rang mental health services. The following morning Rassoul got up early, walked to Mangere from where he was staying in Onehunga and set fire to himself.
He died in Middlemore Hospital less than five hours later.
Whether this is the result of people in immigration caught up in some prejudice because of the 'war on terror' may not be the case and is certainly not implied. However, that it was suppressed means we are not getting to understand how life is for some of these people and therefore gain a balanced view of things happening in the world.
That people will quickly write condemning slogans on Mulsim Mosques in NZ after the London bombings demonstrates to me that many feel such people are responsible and are indeed initiating terror upon the world. I feel quite disturbed by this alone when I consider the bombings are not driven by these people but by more sophisticated, monied groups as written about extensively on the Internet. Hopefully more truthful information will filter out among people and we won't be drawn into this fabrication of war.
