The the 1980s when Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke's Labour government talked about introducing a national ID card, tens of thousands of people demonstrated against it. John Howard criticised the plan saying that it was an:

Now, it seems, he rather likes the idea... And the threat of terrorism is, naturally, behind the change of heart.
This was a significant point made in the above article:

This research was unable to uncover any instance where the presence of an identity card system in those countries was seen as a significant deterrent to terrorist activity.”
I'd like to think that New Zealanders would make a similar strong statement as the Australians of the 80s did, should the idea ever be given serious credence here. Somehow though, I doubt it.
