I woke up at 11 and looked out my window and saw a huge trail bieng layed by a white/silver plane

the plane circled around my house (big circles) and never stopped spraying, it left rather thin trails which took a few minutes to dissapate..

its still going... brb.. looking again

yeh its still going, biggggg circles..

i talked to a mate that lives in newmarket.. he's watching the same sortof thing..

The question we have to ask is..

Why are large planes circling in the first place? dont they have some place to be?

it has stopped spraying and seems to be heading off towards rangitoto island..

We were in a seminar all day and missed the action. We did see a couple of the early morning dissipating contrails, driving into the city. I have seen around four or so over the last few days. All short, quickly dissipating and with that double, slightly bulbous look. It has been very icy cold over this period and I suspect, perfect conditions for normal contrail formation at flight altitudes.

I would say that it's a bit unusual for a plane in holding pattern to be flying as high as 30,000 or 40,000 feet. Perhaps it isn't unusual - does anybody know?

The only reason I can think of for flying at that altitude is for fuel economy. The lower the altitude the greater the fuel consumption.

When an international flight comes in, it requires enough fuel in reserve to enable it to fly to an alternate airport for reasons like closure due to fog. But someone must have decided that the airport was going to open soon so they were asked to hold. Maybe Wellington was closed as well. If both were closed then they would have to go to Ohakea or Whenuapai. I know Ohakea in the past has been available as an alternate landing destination in an emergency.

They call the holding pattern a 'stack' and overseas it's quite common to see at major destinations.

Hi all,

This describes what I saw yesterday. At 8.45 I looked out and saw a short white trail which seemed to be static. It was very high and no sign of plane. Then it started to move slowly and disappeared. A little further on another one appeared and did the same thing. I got the camera out and took 3 shots as another one formed and moved towards the City. Only one photo came out.

After 10.30 Ray came up the road following the progress of a long thin trail which we took several photos of. No plane was visible. We kept watching, then saw 2 planes making long trails, going backwards and forwards and curving around. The planes were easily seen - one then climbed very high and turned in a semi-circle leaving 2 fairly thick trails which we took more photos of. We kept watching for about half an hour and they headed away, in what we took to be a southerly direction but probably towards the City. None of these white trails lasted very long. Ray did have the impression that they were flying to a pattern, but after reading Info 4's post thought it was probable that they could have been waiting to land.

I went out again just before 12, but all activity had gone. I wouldn't say they were chemtrails, just contrails and interesting to see. Unfortunately, we didn't get the results on camera.
