On TV1, 7.30 am, Monday 6 June there will be a repeat screening of the documentary "Who was here before us". First shown 3 years ago this documentary looks at the questions "Did the Maori only set foot here eight hundred years ago? Indeed were they the first to arrive?"
Barry Brailsford and Gary Cook are amongst those interviewed in this programme. Also features the Kaimanawa 'Wall'.

Hi Melody,
Two thousand years ago there were nine Phoenician settlements in New Zealand. Have you read the above titled book by Ross Wiseman. I have been to one of the sites MT TAUHARA and climbed it. There is evidence there. I will scan a couple of images into the photo area as I dont know how to upload them here.

Re the early screening time - thanks for that Colin. In a different posting Betty Rowe made that point also - as I said to her, it is a damned weird time to be playing this doco! (Being a public holiday I guess they don't have their regular breakfast show, so perhaps they needed something to throw into that time slot)

Yes Deano, we have this and other books by Ross (he is in fact, an acquaintance of ours). No doubt Mysterious New Zealand will cover the whole topic of the Phoenician theory in depth in due course. It is a most fascinating subject and there certainly seems to be some intriguing aspects to it. There is extensive evidence of Egyptian and Phoenician presence in Australia for example (note: evidence, not proof). Of course, the authorities are dead against the possibility of this being so. So perhaps there is no reason why they could not also have come to New Zealand.
We know Ross to be an enthusiastic, committed and creative researcher, even if some of his research and conclusions are, from time to time, incompatible with our own views and ways of doing things.
Thanks for uploading the scans. The photo gallery probably isn't the most ideal place for such images. We are working on a way for users to be able to upload images to the body of a forum message which would be handy in this instance, but unfortunately, at present, this facility is not yet complete, keep an eye out for announcements.

Deano,
We've had quite a bit to do with Ross, Mel finished off the layout to print readiness of one of his books and we did some photography for him. In return he has given us the right to use anything in his books for Mysterious New Zealand.
We also visited Ross at his home and examined the latex impressions he made from the Mount Tauhara rock markings and the aluminium and plaster casts made from them which he used to discover the map of New Zealand etc. Ross had done an enormous amount of work on this project requiring many visits to the Tauhara sites.
Because he had painted over the outlines of the images in order for them to be identified and photographed and to some indeterminate degree had exercised some creativity (acknowledged by him), we could not, with any certainty, verify his conclusions. But, on the other hand, could not dismiss his claims either. With the exception of his extrapolations into fiction (the characterisations of the Phoenicians etc) his stuff is intriguing and we remain interested.
We are very hopeful that some indisputable evidence will manifest to prove the presence of Phoenicians in New Zealand beyond doubt - a well preserved shipwreck would do nicely.
For anyone interested, here's a NZ page on the Phoenicians and the possibility of them visiting here. Some of the content looks like Ross' s stuff.
