On Tuesday 22 March, at about 2.30pm, I was driving north along the North Western Motorway in Auckland towards Henderson....
There was a lot of normal cloud cover, mostly white and light grey, but in the middle of one cloud, just over the Henderson/Royal Heights kind of area, was a very dark grey cloud extending down from the other clouds in a cone like the beginnings of a tornado! It did not reach down to the ground, probably only about a third of the way down. It just looked really weird and unnatural - I could see other people driving on the motorway were looking at it too - so it wasn't my imagination!
When I got closer to it, the shape seemed to break up a bit, and wasn't so definite any more, and there was rain in the specific area surrounding it, but nowhere else in the sky.
Did anyone else happen to see this and photograph it?
Interesting post. Was this similar to what you saw? I took this one on the 28th March up here in Whangarei. I'm not sure of what type of cloud it is yet but will do a bit of research. The tail drop off is virga which I understand is where supercooled cloud droplets in a slightly subzero environment turn to ice (sublime) and fall towards earth. When they encounter warmer air at the lower altitude the virga melt/condense and turns back into watery cloud drops.

Hi Azimuth
That cloud is similar to what I saw, except the shape was even stronger and more definitely cone-shaped, and it was dark grey, with lots of white clouds above, behind and around it - there was no blue sky visible at the time. So it really stood out!
It seems that every time we go to Marlborough or Golden Bay, there is a huge amount of chemtrail activity down there - very frustrating. Golden Bay is such a beautiful, unspoiled place, it makes me so mad that the skies are being ruined in such a way. We have some friends that live down there, I will ask if they can keep an eye out for continuing trails, and maybe take a few photos for the forum.

I saw and photographed one of these things in the early eighties, most strange. It's in my photo archives somewhere (a slide), when I get around to it I'll convert it to digital and post it here.
As far as understand, a waterspout is just a twister that has come into contact with water, usually the sea, and sucks the water up. They usually are in the form of a spout rather than an inverted funnel, probably because of the mass of the water. On a trip to white Island form Tauranga in the early seventies I saw one of these. It was huge, very tall, and very sinister and frightening. We were in a very slow (7.5 knots) motor sailor which was not very nimble and for some time were very concerned that it's erratic path would intersect our course. Fortunately it didn't, though it stayed in sight for about an hour...
They are a wonderful sight. I have also seen a few down off the Coromandel in the early 90's whilst out fishing. Unfortunately It was before I found an interest in photography so never got any photo's.
