The sky is covered by a blanket of odd looking gridded clouds..
There are lines of clouds in the horizen, i expect they will expand into a grid like the rest.
Here are some pictures from google that look a lot like what im seeing

I had the opportunity to take some photos of the clouds this afternoon at around 4.15pm in West Auckland. Two large, distinct holes appeared at separate areas in the sky one after the other. There was a lot of thin layered cloud with ripples as well. It spread over a large expanse of the sky. I have posted a few photos in the Photo Gallery.

| The clouds were amazing this afternoon. I don't think I've ever seen a sky like it... |

| First thing this morning the sky was completely clear, then some low altitude clouds formed around 10 am. The clouds that covered the sky this afternoon seemed to come from what appeared to be bands of cloud coming in from the west. I was outside around 6.15 and that hole was pretty much over the middle of Auckland still visible… shame the moon wasn’t out.. would've made a great photo... |

HiCarus,
what a fantastic capture (series of photos). That hole looks as if it has formed in altocumulus clouds which I believe forms at between 8,000 - 20,000 feet. That sure is one unusual looking hole in that cloud though.
Notice how other photos of Hole Punch Clouds always seem to have that whispy cloud fall off (virga) beneath them, the hole in in you image seems to lack that virga!!!!
Hi Bloodhound, that top one looks like cirrocumulus waves, apparently they form at over 18-20,000 feet.
My wife tells me there was a lot of altocumulus cloud up here late this afternoon as well. Unfortunately I was stuck inside all afternoon & evening working :( :(
Keep looking Up

Hi everyone,
Lyra I've been considering the time you saw the hole in the cloud - was it at 6.15pm? The one I saw was at 4.15pm and didn't hang around for two hours as I watched the sky off and on for an hour or so afterwards and the formation changed. Seems like there might have been a few of those holes around.

Hi Carus,
The photo's I posted were taken around 4.30 yesterday afternoon. There were definitely 2 of these holes up there at the time.
At around 6.15 pm there was a large, visible hole through the hazy high cloud - approx half way between Titirangi and the city -
I assumed that it was the same hole that we took the images of... |
