...so just a bunch of mixed shots from the last few months to tide us over, some including trails of various or maybe even dubious kinds(?) :)
I have a stack of shots, mainly cloud formations, that go back to last year but can't be a-r-s-e-d uploading them all on dialup so here's a sample from the last few months... (WARNING - could take a while to load if you're using dialup like me!).
Some cloud formations from Feb/Mar 2011 -
This one's actually a trail left by an aircraft. Notice how all the other cloud around it seems to be giving it it's space like it's not quite "one of them"!
And this one was left after an aircraft flew high above Whenuapai. I just saw it trailing out from behind the cloud cover and then the trail mysteriously stopped forming! Had to go get my camera from the vehicle some distance away so this is how it appeared by the time I took the photo -
Was going to post this earlier in the General forum but never got around to it. Gee, I guess they mean like they did in the Gulf Of Mexico ay?!
And this is a strange one. I'd stopped on a little road between Massey & Swanson on 1 March 2011 and looked up and saw this forming across the sky. There was no aircraft noise but I could physically see this thing forming in the clouds until it was right across the sky! The only thing I could think of was that maybe an aircraft had just passed through here but the reaction in the clouds was somehow delayed hence no aircraft noise. A weird experience nonetheless 8)
Trails over a western sunset 30 March 2011 -
Lots of colours up in them skies and around the sun at sunset plus hello, another trail on the western horizon. All taken 31 March 2011 -
The only thing I happened to catch in May 2011 was this contrail up above Henderson on one of those rare blue sky winter days so here's 4 shots of it as it passed over (24 May 2011). And yeah, there were some pretty weird looking clouds around all that day, the ones in the photos not really doing them justice -
Not much seen in June due to the large number of overcast or heavily clouded days but here's yet another shot of a familiar-looking fake cloud formed by an aircraft out west just a few days ago (same shape, size, location, time, etc, etc). I like the way the slim moon was present at the top of this shot -

The last couple of evenings saw a fair few trails being laid out west in the usual places. Yesterday afternoon I got a call from someone heading over scenic drive around 5pm to say there was a lot of hazy looking trail-like cloud around and a particularly big patch to the left of the sun with a big rainbow-coloured area running vertically through it. I didn't have my camera where I was but was able to get to a vantage point in the Oratia area and observe it. Was a very bright afternoon and mainly blue sky except along the horizon and around the sun out towards the west. The rainbow coloured area was quite vivid but kind of "dirty" looking smack in the middle of a very artificial looking hazy "cloud" mass to the left of the low sun. There were also visible 3 very recently laid trail segments.
This evening I observed several trails out west in the same area as last night. Again I saw three - 1 running from top left to bottom right and 2 the opposite way. As per usual all 3 were done in succession from left to right across the horizon and in a timeframe that could easily have allowed one aircraft to do all 3. By the time the third was being done cloud was pretty much obscuring the last 2. By the time I got to my camera I was only able to take this one photo showing the top of the last 2 done. My battery then died so I couldn't take a photo of the first one which had now spread out quite a bit in a very familiar fashion. Hence I've just tacked the photo on here as I didn't think it warranted its own thread - the first trail was laid to the left of these 2 - this photo was taken from Mt Atkinson in Titirangi.
We most certainly are getting a LOT of trails being done out west atm by the looks of it based on what I saw in the sky yesterday & today - the same types of "cloud" & after-effects of the trails I observed have been around many, many afternoons/evenings lately. If anybody reading this is in a position to observe the west coast area between piha & muriwai most evenings then please by all means have your camera at the ready to catch the action and maybe add to these threads with some better photos than I can come up with!
Many long trails this afternoon over the coast, to the west of Palmerston North stretching in a general north-south direction. Seemed to begin from around 4.30pm. No pics sorry had a lot of work on (excuses excuses i know)
