I know this is not a UAP/UFO sighting but I thought this the most appropriate place to report the following.
Yesterday morning (4 March 05) I could not sleep so slipped out to my back deck for a quiet cigarette. The night was dark and the sky very clear (?) During this time I was fortunate enough to witness a large meteorite (shooting star). This happened at about 1.25 am, the meteorite was about the size of my small fingernail held at arms length and it entered the atmosphere at a perfect vertical angle (as viewed by me) WSW of where I was standing. This spectacle lasted about 0.5 of a second before the meteorite burnt out at approx 25 degrees above the visible horizon. The meteorite was incandescent white with a greenish halo and long tail. I have routinely gazed at the stars for many years and have seen untold "shooting stars" but never one of this size or brilliance. I presumed it was either very close or very large. Mother nature is a wonderful thing, I went to bed a happy man. :D :D
Azimuth
PS. And yes I did make a wish but can not tell you what, other than to say it had something to do with the welfare of Mother Earth and all of her inhabitants (with a few exceptions   )!!

What a thrill :-)
I saw my very first shooting star about 14 years ago. John and I were up late one night and standing out in the garden looking at the sky. A shooting star appeared, travelling very slowly, almost parallel to the ground heading out toward the Manukau Harbour. It had a long tail and was very orange, and was probably around the same size as the one you saw Azimuth, it looked very large. This one also made a fizzing noise and small chunks were flying off of the tail!
Heh - it being my first one, I thought they all looked like that :P
Wow, it really is quite a thrill. They say if you stare at a beautiful clear sky with no moon (no light pollution either) you will see a shooting star every 2.5 minutes. I have see lierally hundreds over the years but none as big as the last.
I was actually waiting for the explosion, there was no noise/sound associated with the one I saw.
i too have witnessed a massive shooting star, it was like nothing i'd ever seen, i never even knew they could be that big, it was blueish and only lasted a couple seconds but it sure was spectacular.
