For a while now there's been some very intense sunsets in West Auckland and often some very weird & wonderful cloud formations accompanying them. These few shots show some of the most intense "sun rays" I've seen emanating from behind cloud at sunset. You may not see it too clearly in these photos but there was some very strong green & purple colouration visible by eye, even more intense viewed through sunglasses. These were viewed from Seymour Road, Sunnyvale (between Henderson & Oratia in West Auckland) one evening in the last week of January 2011 -

aw bummer smash, f***g f***r!
Great little bit of information about the rays.
The wiki photos are actually quite nice!
In video games they are called God Rays, and are highly desirable, for realism :P

While here in Gisborne we haven't had crapstacular sun rays/sets, we have had some real deep deep blood red numbers, I was tempted to photo, but given there are enough photos of sun sets to fill a meteorologists failure folder I didn't bother.

Obviously the first one is Kora playing live in Wellington a few years ago. The lighting was cool and is basically the same principal as the crepuscular rays minus the sun and sky.
The other 2 pics were taken from Hataitai in Wellington looking west several years ago.
