Haven't really been following events as I haven't been around to catch hardly any media coverage over the weekend (what a relief!). However, the little bit I did pick up on Saturday morning was that numbers were obviously very important for the media to be broadcasting repeatedly as usual as they were laying it on VERY thick. Here's what I heard on both TV1 & TV3 in the hour or two we had it on -

29 miners trapped
2 escaped

Of the 29, 16 are employees and 13 are contractors

2+9 = 11

1+6 = 7 and 1+3=4 so 7+4 = 11

2 = 1+1 and can be expressed also as 11 (if you don't do numerology that way use the month instead)

That's 3 lots of 11 and that gives us our magic number!

Oh and it's November, the 11th month.

Apparently after talking to a family member who saw & heard the first reporting of this accident some sources were saying from the start that they suspected 33 miners were missing but then that figure was amended after the 2 escapees were found.

In a random report I saw in the Sunday Herald (I felt dirty after picking it up!) I saw a guy talking about the accident and relating it to another incident in the US - the West Virginia coal mine accident back in April when 29, yes the same number as the miners trapped in Greymouth, died. Here's a link about that - http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/10/us/10westvirginia.html?_r=1

Notice in the linked article about the West Virginia accident they also mention that a 1970 explosion killed 38 at Finley Coal Company, in Hyden, Ky. What does 3+8 equal?

As I said, I've only looked at things very briefly over the weekend so any more detail or analyses welcome but I'm sure it's all just another long string of random numerological coincidences right? :curtain:

Oh and here's the Pike River Coal company logo. Is that.... a pyramid?

A very quick random sampling of other global mining/earth resource company logos (there's heaps more like this). Hmm, they do all seem to share a bit of a common theme don't they? :-k

Adendum: Someone just reminded me...

2010 - the year of the mega-ritual?

20+10 = 30

2+0+1+0 = 3

So 2010 = 33

You can do whatever you want with numbers though. Just that some do more with them than others (think they do) and the others just think it's all a load of hogwash... 8-[ :)

Nothing would sprise me brother, and whenever there is a media fest ya gotta wonder.
Certainly seems to be a trendy thing to do;
Trapped miners.
Media fest.
yawn
As for a meaning or a purpose?

Not to trivialize the unpleasantness of such things.
I have been to the mouth of a mine in Greymouth
The stench of sulphur and general conditions makes one glad one isn't 'workin' at mine'

Yesterday when I posted the above I had no idea of the gravity of the event because I have successfully avoided the mainstream media, but obviously it is serious, so no disrespect was intended by last post.
Not that it changes my suspicion of this event.

Sad news indeed. I will share now that I had an unsettling feeling about this one right from the start. My sentiments are with the families & friends.
