The sun sets on the First New Zealanders

The new ‘revised’ history of New Zealand

We’ve all seen the documentaries and visual imagery is compelling. Whole new generations grow up with a picture of this land as pristine and pure, uninhabited until Polynesian footprints placed upon our shores. Before this belief continues any longer, we owe it to ourselves, and to the original ancestors of this land, to look at the facts. There were people here before the Polynesian migrations. They left behind multiple clues as outlined in the previous two parts of this series. They also left behind their bones – and these tell the most tragic tale of all. Far from pure and peaceful, the land now known as New Zealand was an unimaginable hell, awash in the blood of both the original peoples and Maori. Formal burials tell us about the First Peoples, but the bones of the ancient peoples can also be found under layers of charcoal, in the old cooking pits.

Up until the 1970s, that early Maori were cannibals was common knowledge, though its extent and the horrifying effects on all the people of this country could not have been imagined. New Zealand’s early history was openly outlined in books available to schools. Suddenly, books were withdrawn, a new ‘revised’ history appeared and the original, pre-Maori inhabitants disappeared from public view. This article allows them to speak again.

Maori have always spoken of a race of fair skinned people who preceded them. They called them "Patu-paiarehe" or Turehu, and some still trace a shared lineage. In 1867, a Ngati Whatua Tohunga (historian) stated that the Ngati Whatua came to New Zealand from the Cook Islands nine generations earlier, making landfall at a place called Hatarau (Little Barrier Island). Arriving there they encountered a race of fair haired people with fair skin and green blue eyes, whom they named PAKEHA . They took the women to breed from - the males as slaves and food.

There are Maori who speak of babies stolen long ago by a "fairy people" who hid in the bush, only coming out at night – an understandable action of people who were being killed and eaten faster than they could breed. It is also highly possible that children taken were born to their own women captured by Maori. In savage post-Maori New Zealand, captives were eaten immediately, kept for breeding or enslaved and subsequently killed for food – an unpalatable history to inherit, but a fact, nonetheless.

One of the last surviving sub-tribes of the Patu-paiarehe was called the Ngati Hotu, pockets of whom survived into colonial times. Here’s a description of them from Maori oral history: "Generally speaking, Ngati Hotu were of medium height and of light colouring. In the majority of cases they had reddish hair. They were referred to as urukehu. It is said that during the early stages of their occupation of Taupo they did not practice tattooing as later generations did, and were spoken of as te whanau a Rangi (the children of heaven) because of their fair skin. There were two distinct types. One had reddish skin, a round face, small eyes and thick protruding eyebrows. The other was the Turehu. They had white hair and blue green eyes. They were fair-skinned, much smaller in stature, with larger and very handsome features." ( Refer: Tuwharetoa, Chpt.7, pg.115, by rev. John Grace). Note: The cavern dwellings and stone walls of these people can still be seen at Taupo, but are unprotected and under threat from development.

Challenging stuff indeed smash!
Great link.
For us who have woken up to the reality of the world as it is - as opposed to the ubiquitous BS that passes for history, it is no surprise.
Grievance industry looking as healthy as ever.

Especially those who have looked into ancient cultures, and the realization that there is a good chance that we may not be Mark 1 of civilization - more like Mark 100.
To find in our own backyard evidence of huge swathes of time gone by, and different people come and gone.
The Romans called them The Barbarians, we know them as the Kelts.
But more importantly as usual when a situation arises where information is in question, look who stands to benefit?
Keep the sheeple in divisive conflict and motivated by fear and greed.
A winning formula that is easy to see keeps working so why change it?

The Roman empire now operated out of Washington DC, they even have the eagle motifs, architecture and a mercenary army.

Yes, challenging indeed. Thanks for the link which I'll pass onto others for perusal. It always intrigues me how the usual response to challenges like this is in the majority of cases outright anger and complete denial rather than inquisitiveness and questions leading to more investigation  That kind of thing really only validates what the article is saying about human behaviour rather than dismissing it and in turn exposes the people managers even further, at least to those who are looking (and alas therein lies the rub as they say as more eyes need to be open!).

Something that comes to mind here also is Alan Watt's description of mainstream history or "his story" - a story written by him, the "authorised" author

This definitely warranted a follow-up so in order not to hijack this thread I responded to this in the General forum here - http://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1602

(though obviously it could be contemporaneous)
Strange isn't it, I have seen this in one of my zillion docos / books yonkers ago, and suddenly it comes out.
What to make of communication and information?
I suppose somebody "discovers' it is there and makes a hoo hah about it *shrug*

I wonder how many similar events it will take to shake the slumber / wake from the bubble?
One feels like patiently asking the question;
"Which part of We are not the first - don't you understand?"
Anyhoo, we prolly shouldn't bring up the 1967 was the last time it was illegal to shoot an ab-original.

Great link smash keep em coming

Talking of rewriting "his-story"... now it'll be "her-story"...

Rewriting the history of Moriori
IMOGEN NEALE
Last updated 05:00 20/03/2011

The Ministry of Education is rewriting New Zealand history in the school curriculum - altering what textbooks say about the Moriori.

Generations of New Zealanders have grown up believing Moriori were an inferior, pre-Maori race driven from New Zealand to seek refuge in the Chatham Islands.

In his 1989 book Moriori: A People Rediscovered, the late historian Michael King said four generations of New Zealanders were taught to vilify Moriori.

"Nobody in New Zealand - and few elsewhere in the world - has been subjected to group slander as intense and as damaging as that heaped upon the Moriori," he wrote.

The mythological history was perpetuated by the School Journal, a magazine-style series used in all New Zealand primary schools.

King said the journal's account was demonstrably wrong, yet for 60-odd years it was lodged in the national imagination.

That wrong was righted last week when Education Minister Anne Tolley travelled to the Chatham Islands to present a new series of School Journals that give a true account of the Moriori.

Marae elders, parents, students and officials gathered at Kopinga Marae for the presentation of the journals. In the centre of the room is a wooden pou or pole inscribed with the names of 1561 Moriori living on the islands in 1835.

Tolley called the textbooks a "gift of peace" between the Ministry of Education and the Chatham Islanders.

The journals feature stories, pictures and illustrations about Moriori and carry a preface explaining who they are and why the journals are dedicated to them.

One reads "The 1916 Part 1 Journal described [Moriori] as "lazy, stupid people with flat noses and very dark skins. In 1916 many people believed this story, and they also believed that all the Moriori had died out. In fact, we know that none of this is true."

In a publication marking the centenary of the New Zealand School Journal, the early journals were lambasted as a "lamentable lapse in the veracity" of the books.

Hokotehi Moriori Trust general manager Maui Solomon, the grandson of Moriori leader Tommy Solomon, said the presentation was "a dream come true". In 1986 he told officials that until Moriori was taught in schools, the misconceptions would continue.

"Actually getting it into schools in English and Maori - and some Moriori - is a great fillip, a milestone in Moriori renaissance. It was a fantastic day - a very emotional, powerful day."

Tolley said the people gathered at the presentation were "so gracious".

"You know they have suffered as a result of New Zealand's ignorance of who they are, where they came from and their history."

She said the journals were a correction and apology that has been in the works for many years.

"I'm just the lucky one who was in the position to hand over the final result.

"For the first time Moriori have an authentic voice in the pages of the School Journal," she said.

In the 2006 New Zealand census, 945 people said they were of Moriori descent.

King said Moriori were not a pre-Maori race driven from New Zealand. "Their language, artefacts and bodily remains show them to have been Polynesian."
