Kia ora koutou

Here are some images I took of some unusual cloud forms today – 2:30pm + . I say unusual because that is what they are - in these parts anyways ... I do not see these cloud forms often. The cloud was unusual enough for an image – as I began to take photos the colour began to form.

There were no PTs today. I saw 1 faint contrail – short, and dissipating evenly. Given the science of saturation with respect to ice, why no PTs around this time?

NB: Raw images – resized only – no editing. The camera rarely does the colours in coloured clouds justice (2nd image is a pretty good one though) ... more vivid with own eyes - even more so with shades.

North to north-west facing – Pelorus Valley ... 2:30 – 2:38pm

Well captured. Have seen this in Auckland quite a bit. It is quite hard to capture unless you have a half-decent camera in my experience as you note. I've deleted many photos taken of this kind of thing when they looked amazing by eye but came out very bland in the photos. And yes, sunglasses act as great filter to intensify the effect 8)

My most interesting experience was viewing this kind of thing from Mt Albert one day. An elderly gentleman asked me what I was taking photos of and when I told him he said, "oh yes, I can see that now". I then handed him a pair of sunglasses and when he viewed the clouds again he got quite excited and said he'd never seen anything quite like that before! He said he'd be looking out for it again from now on so he could show his wife & grandkids :)
