In case you thought Opera was immune to at least some of the invasive crap out there, think again.
The latest version (whilst still the best, fastest browser around imho) has some really "cool" stuff built in. On the upgrade page there's a list of new features including -
Opera can prompt you to share your location, making geolocation-supporting websites more useful.
Search suggestions for selected providers help you enter find results more easily.
Prompt you to share your location? Oh so you get a choice... really?... ok... And in case you don't get the second of those just think about "search suggestions" for a second. "Prompts" is another way of putting it. In other words - they come up with the ideas, not you, and those little "lead-ins" can take you in any number of directions. Is this a subtle (or not so subtle for those with properly functioning thought processes) form of or part of social engineering? You bet!
On the same page is a link to a (Google?) map with the heading "Where Is Opera?". The description says - "Opera has tens of millions of fans around the world. Try out this interactive map with Opera’s new geolocation support to see who else is using Opera 10.60 in your area." Wow! Cool!!! O-o-o-o-k... :|
I realise this kind of thing has been around for a while but it's only now being implemented on such a wide scale as far as can be seen.
Ok, so now you have everyone with a mobile phone and/or laptop using one of several built-in browsers all containing specific purpose-built geolocation software and are all connected to the "net" via mostly WIFI. Methinks a fisherman requires that his net has no holes - the better the repair of the net, the more fish are caught. Combine a great net with the best sounding gear on the best ship available and your catch is (almost) guaranteed 100% every time. And that's just thinking about it on one or maybe 2 levels... 8)
