Kia ora koutou
I'm back at the PC after some serious technical pissing around ... in the end our technician believes most of our probs related to the phone line ... (Telecom are immoral when it comes to servicing their lines ... been in the ring with them many times ... us 12% of Dial-ups don't count for much ... broadband looking more and more like a necessity).
Onto biz ....
Firstly, a warm welcome to all the new folk . :)
I have not taken many photos of the sky activity over the last couple of months - what with all our PC probs etc ... have observed many trails - persistent and contrails. Of the images I did get, most were in April. I am including the more interesting rather than an account of the frequency of PTs. I am posting in chronological order.
1. 2010_0401_1829-12_PVh-WNW. Sun dog and two southbound PTs with different reactions. I took several images of the fresher trail and its reaction. Image 2. shows the progress.
2. chain reaction
3. 2010_0402_1107-09_PVh-N. Next day - another sun dog and more PTs.
4. 2010_0403_951-28_PVh-N. Very rare to see aircraft flying in this direction ... we used to see military jets fly down the valley at low altitude and sweep up and over the hills to the north. Given the date and proximity to Easter weekend, I think these aircraft may have had something to do with an air display up north. The interesting thing is the persistent trails look very much like they have been turned on and not as a result of atmospheric conditions. These trails lingered for sometime slowly drifting eastward out of sight.
5. 2010_0408_1126-27_PVh-N. This is very interesting .. I have never seen an aircraft on this path - SW bound over the lower Pelorus Valley .... I happened to notice the trail, and I happened to have the camera. What got me excited was there was no sound ... I took several images - when on the PC no aircraft could be seen ... now this might be the reflective properties of the craft material in relation to the morning sun, but try as I might I could not produce any pigmentation to hint at an aircraft ... although ... a couple of the images caught something ... see image 6.
(there's a small plane heading Nelson way at top of this image)
6. 2010_0408_1125-55_PVh-N. .... and not a sound ....
7. 2010_0408_1535-07_PVh-N ... Same day - 4 hours later ... 2 aircraft flying together on basically same path as the above, but heading NE. Who would fly in formation like this - military? ... maybe they were looking for the phantom craft above.
8. 2010_0412_1509-26_BLN-WNW. Blenheim - what a day of unusual busy skyscape. Here are a couple of images I got of some colouration in clouds and a 'barb' looking end of a swooping PT.

All great photos again as usual ruapaka, thanks.
I hear your woes re dialup now I've been suffering with it for the last 6 weeks! Out here towards the west coast of Auckland the telecom lines are shocking in places with no sign of improvement any time soon. In communication with our ISP here they say there's a huge waiting list for broadband and no immediate sign of improvement. The date bandied around was "sometime around 2015" for official telecom upgrades! Like anything else, all the hype about "highspeed" broadband you hear or see in the media is a complete lie with completely different motives than the public are led to believe but you all know that already... Meanwhile a friend of mine sits smack in the middle of one of those unbundled areas close to town that seems to have almost no limit on speed at certain times...
Back to business... shots 5 & 6 are particularly interesting. Some photos I took earlier of several short trails out west here that schadow also witnessed from Massey appeared kind of similar to the naked eye and she actually noted this in her response I think. That is, that in this case it appeared there was no sign of any aircraft at the head of the trail that you would normally get an indication of. Mind you it's hard to tell when they're not overhead and my camera's not up to capturing enough detail to tell either way. Captured also in the vicinity of the trails was a small white object, of which several were seen by eye by 2 witnesses at the time of taking the photos. See here - http://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1350
The followup with shot 7 adds even more interest being that it's 2 aircraft obviously flying in formation which civil aircraft would never normally do. Well observed
