Blasted back to the stone age?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110607/sc_afp/usspaceweather_20110607213847

The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Hows your aurora Laura?

Yeah good spotting, that was a big one, the magnetosphere was pounded last night. Its calmed down now though was a long period of intense pressure, hope those big quakes stay away, too much pressure for that amount of time gonna create some simmering tension.

Go to spaceweather.com, they have excellent reporting.

Fairly significant storm for a short while there! The Geomagnetic Storm was rated G4 which is "Severe" on a scale of 1 - 5 ie. only 1 measure above that being "Extreme". G4 storms can have the following effects -

Power systems: possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems will mistakenly trip out key assets from the grid.

Spacecraft operations: may experience surface charging and tracking problems, corrections may be needed for orientation problems.

Other systems: induced pipeline currents affect preventive measures, HF radio propagation sporadic, satellite navigation degraded for hours, low-frequency radio navigation disrupted, and aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California (typically 45° geomagnetic lat.)**.

Solar Update / Geomagnetic Storm Recap
08/07/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 01:25 UTC

Solar Update: Solar activity was at low levels on Saturday, with only C-Class activity taking place around Sunspot 1263 and new Sunspot 1267. There will remain the chance for a possible M-Class event.

Geomagnetic Storm Recap:
The biggest Geomagnetic Storm of Solar Cycle 24 thus far is over as the K-Index is now below 5. At its peak the storm was briefly close to the G4 Level and visible Aurora was seen in Northern Europe and also parts of Canada and northern USA. The Solar Wind increased to around 700 km/s after the initial shock and the Bz tilted sharply south (-20nt). Had the incoming CME shock hit about 4 hours later than it did, the visible aurora in North America would have been much better. By the time it got dark out, most of the show was over. This event was short in duration compared to previous storms in the past, nonetheless it was great to see.

The storm also stirred up quite a bit of activity in northern EU and NA on the 6 meters (50mhz) and even the 2 meter (144mhz) Ham Radio bands. I was able to work close to 40 aurora contacts on 6m and one on 2m.

Photo I took in my backyard. (No tripod and Light Polution Galore)

Yep, was just briefly looking at the latest report on Solarcycle24 (as follows) and saw that the "Currently" box at the top is showing "X CLASS FLARE!"...

Two M-Class Flares / Solar Update
08/09/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 04:10 UTC

Two M-Class Flares: A second M-Class flare, this time a M2.5 took place at 03:54 UTC Tuesday morning around Sunspot 1263. This is in addition to the earlier M3.5 flare which I reported on Monday afternoon. The first flare produced a small, but fast moving (2010 km/s) Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). More analysis is needed to determine if part of it is earth directed.

the second M-Class event is ongoing as of this posting and appears to be fairly long in duration. More updates to follow.

M2.5 Solar Flare (Early Tuesday)

Solar Update: Just when solar activity was slowing down, an M3.5 Solar Flare took place around Sunspot 1263 Monday afternoon. It was short in duration and should have little impact on earth. Sunspot 1266 which is also located in the norhtern hemisphere, is beginning to expand somewhat. There will continue to be a chance for C-Class flares and perhaps another M-Class event.

Sunspot 1261 which was the cause of atleast 6 M-Class flares and multiple incoming CME shocks, has rotated onto the western limb and is now out of direct earth view.

So that was an X6.9 on the 9th August 2011 then!

(Note: I very slightly exaggerated the magnitude of that storm back on the 7th. It almost reached G4 status, so still obviously quite significant.)

X-class flare just now, sun is very unsettled. Dont think this is earth facing, however the behemoth hole 40,000km wide is turning in our direction, we dont need her ramping up at this time..

Looks like a biggie!

Friday, Nov. 4, 2011

CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters have upgraded the chance of X-class solar flares today to 20%. The source would be AR1339, one of the biggest sunspots in many years. The active region rotated over the sun's eastern limb two days ago and now it is turning toward Earth.

The sunspot has already unleashed one X-flare on Nov. 3rd around 2027 UT. A movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the extreme ultraviolet flash:

(go to website for video - http://spaceweather.com/ )

The flare created waves of ionization in Earth's upper atmosphere, altering the normal propagation of radio waves over Europe and the Americas. In Ireland, the flare's effect was felt even after dark.

A cloud of plasma or "CME" raced away from the blast site at 1100 km/s. The CME is not heading for Earth. It is, however, heading for Mercury and Venus. Click on the arrow to view a movie of the CME's forecast track:

(go to website for video - http://spaceweather.com/ )

Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the CME will hit Mercury on Nov. 4th around 16:14 UT. NASA's MESSENGER probe in orbit around Mercury will be monitoring the effects of the impact. If the CME overwhelms Mercury's relatively weak magnetic field, it could scour material off the planet's surface creating a temporary atmosphere and adding material to Mercury's comet-like tail. The CME should hit Venus on Nov. 5th; the gossamer cloud will probably break harmlessly against the top of planet's ultra-dense atmosphere.

An X1.9 so we've seen bigger.

Here's a couple of interesting things though. First from the front page of Solar Cycle 24 -

Major X1.9 Solar Flare / Sunspot 1339
11/04/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 03:10 UTC

Farside at the Same Time:
While looking at the images of the X1.9 Flare from last night and the Coronal Mass Ejection, something puzzled me about the direction of the expanding cloud. Part of the cloud appears to be expanding past the Western Limb. At first I thought that maybe a portion of the cloud was Earth directed, however it now turns out that a farside explosion at almost the exact same time of the X-Flare caused the CME. Watch the video below and judge for yourself.

Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpBBLS8G-fA

Strong X1.9 Solar Flare:
Sunspot 1339 produced a major X1.9 Solar Flare at 20:46 UTC Thursday evening. An R3 Level Radio Blackout and a 10cm Radio Burst resulted. It now turns out that no Earth directed CME is expected and there will be no major impact on Earth with the exception of higher proton levels. The solar rotation will bring 1339 into a better position for any possible Earth directed explosions.

SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2011 Nov 03 2016 UTC
Maximum Time: 2011 Nov 03 2027 UTC
End Time: 2011 Nov 03 2032 UTC
Duration: 16 minutes
Peak Flux: 620 sfu

A Day in History::
On this day back on Nov 4, 2003, the largest Solar Flare ever recorded took place around a Sunspot then numbered 486. The flare registered X28+, but was located on the southwest limb and out of direct Earth view. Some estimates are said that the flare was actually X40+. Watch the video below to relive the action.

Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUAlSerYryE

Solar Update / Sunspot 1339 / Eastern Limb:
Solar activity is now at high levels with a major X1.9 solar flare and multiple M-Class and C-Class events taking place around big Sunspot 1339. This region will continue to be a threat for strong solar flares. Sunspot 1339 will soon be in position for earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). More updates to follow.

A couple of the solar flares on Friday actually took place around a region still located on the northeast limb. The largest of these flares was a C8.6. We may soon have another sunspot to keep an eye on.

Sunspot 1330 has rotated onto the western limb and out of direct earth view. As the same time, a small new sunspot is rotating into view on the eastern limb.

Very strange! I posted the second of the "couple of interesting things" earlier but just checking now and it's not there  It's a VERY INTERESTING subject indeed as you'll see if indeed it stays around this time...

Seen in the Solar Cycle 24 forum -

What if 2005 YU55 gets hit by a CME?

Posted by azuria (Yesterday at 5:46pm)

#1 - 2005 YU55 will be closer to earth than the moon on Nov 9th.
#2 - Sunspot 1339 is becoming increasingly active.

So, by the 9th, Sunspot 1339 will be flaring more toward earth
See what I'm getting at?

We all know what happens when CME's hit comets (Elenin, Linear), but what about an asteroid?

Just a question from an amateur.

Posted by eldotda (Yesterday at 6:28pm)

That's a good question. I don't know the answer, but here is a page that says there will be a nationwide test of an emergency system on Nov. 9:

http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/emergency-alert-system-nationwide-test

Coincidence??

Food for thought...

The sun is still really unsettled, magnetospheres untroubled, staying calm, not much pressure coming in, so all good for the moment but the big sunspot is going to be pointed in our direction shortly. Hope you all got some good sunscreen lol

Sunspot 1339 Update
11/06/2011 by Kevin VE3EN at 14:10 UTC
Comment on Message Board

M-Class Flare activity continues:
Sunspot 1339 produced a couple more M1 flares, this time at 01:03 UTC Sunday morning and again at 06:36 UTC. This big Sunspot complex has a Beta-Gamma Delta configuration and there is a good chance for even stronger solar flares.

Solar Update / Sunspot 1339:
Solar activity continues at moderate levels with numerous low level M-Class flares taking place around Sunspot 1339. The solar X-Rays have gone somewhat quiet since a C-Flare at 09:56 UTC Sunday morning. That could change at any time however, as Sunspot 1339 has a Beta-Gamma Delta magnetic configuration and could produce further M-Class events.

Two new Sunspots rotated into view Saturday on the eastern limb and were assigned the numbers 1341 and 1342. A third sunspot rotated into view Sunday morning and may be assigned a number later today. All other regions have been fairly quiet with the exception of two low level C-Flares around 1338.

M1.1 Solar Flare / Filament Eruption:
A solar filament eruption that was detected as an M1.1 solar flare took place at 13:35 UTC Wednesday morning between Sunspot 1342 and 1342 which is located in the northeast quadrant. A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) resulted and a portion of it may be Earth Directed. Check out the amazing video of the eruption below captured by SDO.
