Did anyone else photograph or even see the great big single trail that went right across the centre of Auckland on Sunday 10 Jan 2010 in clear blue skies? We got photos of it being done but they're on somebody else's mobile phone and I haven't had chance to nab 'em yet. We were heading across K'Road from Ponsonby Road and saw the aircraft laying it down. Appeared to have been "turned on" over Southwest Auckland and then was a very solid trail right across the centre of Auckland City and headed North/NE.

Will post photos as soon as I obtain them. Hope they turn out ok (1MP phone camera).

Crakka - I did see the trail being laid on Sunday. I was sitting outside at the Cock and Bull Lynfield when the aircraft appeared early afternoon. It was indeed heading north and I did witness the trail extinguish after approx 3 - 4 minutes of observation. I did think this was odd.

On Monday morning I woke up with an extremely sore throat and aching shoulders and joints - it actually felt like I had the flu. I seem to be fine now (only 2 days later). I'm not saying that this is connected with the trail but I felt really ill and I do wonder......

Before someone asks : No I wasn't hammered (even though I was at the Cock and Bull) so my report is reliable :)

Hi & thanks for the feedback. That particular trail was about as in-your-face as they get so I'm glad to hear at least one other person in Auckland was looking up :)

Also good to hear your feedback on this. I definitely saw it start - we just happened to be looking right at the area of sky where the trail seemed to be "switched on" and we pulled over immediately and started taking shots with a mobile phone as it loomed overhead right across the centre of Auckland City. It looked very clear that this aircraft didn't just appear from the horizon with a trail following it - the trail actually started right about where the suburbs started out southwest way or just before (Hillsborough or even further across at a guess from where I was and maybe from slightly behind where you were Majortom?).

I definitely had the aching shoulders & felt pretty damn lethargic Monday morning but put that down to some "sporting" exertion on Saturday and a couple of late nights. Didn't really think to maybe link it to the trail although these are symptoms I've seen many, many people describe after being "trailed", especially the sore throat. Any metallic taste in the mouth at all?

Will hopefully have those photos tomorrow night. We found a data cable that works for it (luckily a USB system similar to digital cameras) & just had to organise downloading the correct software for the phone (as it's not a "latest model") so we can upload them to the PC.

Hello Crakka.

The aircraft was definitely leaving the trail when it passed over Lynfield/Hillsborough. The aircraft did seem to be tracking from the southwest as you mentioned. I did see the trail stop after approx 4 mins. At 500mph (the average cruising speed of a commercial jetliner) the aircraft would have travelled a further 33 miles in that time....it's logical to assume that all of Auckland was covered . Either the aircraft descended within that time OR it simply turned off whatever it was spraying....

I didn't have a metallic taste in my mouth but I definitely had flu like symptoms that receeded within 2 days. I may have picked up a '48 hour' bug that coincided with the trail's appearance. I hope this is the case!

I look forward to the photos!

Sorry it took me over a week to sort these out but here finally are those pics! Tiny and not fantastic quality being from a 1MP mobile phone camera but clear enough nonetheless. First 8 were taken from the same location beside The Dog's Bollix on the corner of Abbey St and Newton Road up by K'Road at what I think must have been around 3.30-4.00pm. The last 3 were taken shortly afterwards whilst travelling west, the final one being taken from Kelston. All pics are posted in the order they were taken.

Pretty rare to catch persistent trails like this directly over Auckland City in clear skies but this is the third big long one I've witnessed in the process of being laid in the last couple of years, with a few fading contrails also having been seen during that time. There's also been many remnants of trails that I've not actually witnessed in the process of being done and goodness knows how many have been done during cloudy & overcast weather.

(As you can see from the time of posting I'm most definitely on "holiday time" atm!!!)
