ok my friend and i unfortunately did not see this we heard it at approximately 1.15pm BUT overhead my house there was low cloud (ps i know police copters they r regular here also air force forever plus private people) a hovering craft sounded like a jet airline hovered for 5 minutes which is odd unless its a harrier - it went away for about 15 minutes and came back and did the same hovering for the same time - above the cover of the clouds
low rain soaked clouds - one continuous cloud - dark with water
dont know - but glad i had an unbiased witness with me
sorry it took so long to say

Better late than never! Sounds interesting 8) Should've taken video even if it was just sound because of the cloud.

As for that bloody police helicopter - I'm glad someone else said it too! That thing has been up there over west auckland every single night for ages and at all hours including after midnight very often! Funny how it started getting WAAAAAAY more regular after they painted it black! Must be coincidence ay

It's been black for a while now. Pretty much happened around the same time I started seeing all the "black helicopter" reports in the US - things like regular exercises over & around build-up areas using black police/military helicopters. Guarantee it happened in all "commonwealth" countries around the same time seeing as all the police forces are linked by the UN in certain ways. All this buzzing around possibly part of an acclimation programme? It certainly NEVER used to happen ANYWHERE NEAR AS MUCH before... Black seems to be the colour for the "world police" (especially the private forces) if what's happening in the US (Montana) with American Police Force is anything to go by!

Sorry to get off-topic schadow. If people wanna discuss further maybe start another thread somewhere...

Of course if one was highly suspicious and prone to wild supposition then maybe a link could even be made between all this helicopter activity (and resulting constant noise as a cover) and your experience, hehe?! Testing new technology? Something else? Who knows?!

There is another reason why aircraft are painted black. After extensive trials, the Royal Air Force painted all of their training aircraft in black because it was found that it significantly increased the visibility of the aircraft . This could be an explanation as to why the Police chopper has been painted in such a manner. During the summer months in particular, Auckland skies can be quite busy with light aircraft traffic. The mysterious black choppers seen in the USA and other parts of the world bear no insignia or obvious markings - the Auckland Police chopper does. As for the frequency of flights - I lived in Blockhouse Bay for 5 years and it was a frequent (almost daily) visitor day and night. It would sometimes appear two or three times a day. There's a lot of crime in Auckland....

Thanks Majortom, I remember reading ages ago about that reason for painting military aircraft black so I was always wary of links between so-called "black helicopters" in the US (w/o markings as you rightly note) and police forces in commonwealth countries (and others) painting them black. However, the timing was pretty good considering the knowledge of black as a more visible colour HAS been around for ages so quite funny how all countries seemed to be doing it around the same time quite recently. Coincidence? Or maybe they just all agreed at their UN meetings that black was the new safety colour to paint all police aircraft in all the countries and they all did it at the same time

Anyway - painting aircraft black for visibility in the sky is one thing but what about land-based vehicles? To my knowledge it's the opposite effect on land. Black object in the sky against a light background = visible. Black object on the ground against a (mostly) dark background = not as visible as lighter colours. I'm sure there's plenty of other "explanations" for this sort of thing then hehe  (all photos of NZ cops and their unmarked light armoured utility btw) -

Mmmm do I detect a large helping of sarcasm there? I was merely offering an alternative 'explanation' as to why the Auckland Police chopper has been painted black...........

No sarcasm meant Majortom, sorry if it appeared that way. I agreed with you that it may indeed be the very valid reason why the helicopter was painted black. However, as I "added" to the discussion, the black colour appears to have been introduced in all these countries at the same exact time with aircraft, police uniforms (not just special units as in my photos!) and land-based vehicles as well. I'm certainly aware also that any "private" policing units that seem to pop up anywhere in the world also use the same colour for all their assets. Worth noting.

One of my personal takes on it is this - as more and more "private" armies & police forces start turning up around the globe it will be hard to distinguish them from national forces if they are all wearing the same colour (the colour of the executioner btw  ). Worth looking at is the recent appearance of a private company called "American Police Force" in Montana. If you look past all the obfuscation of whether it's some kind of scam or not, the fact is this has been "put out there" ie. now the public have seen a private "policing" force in their midst wearing black uniforms, driving black vehicles and wearing badges that have the word "police" in it. Predictive programming anyone?

Cheers :)
