Hi All
This will be a work in progress and will be continually updated as new info ("info4" U  ) comes to hand
I have been watching the web sites for the international departures and arrivals to get a list of who flies in and out of NZ and from what airports.
I have talked to a couple of pilots as well as several people that have knowledge on aircraft movements for Air NZ aircraft.
I am trying to develop relationships with these guys so I can try and get a better picture for us and it will take some time.
I hope to have a map of NZ eventually that will show the tracks that the Air NZ international flights take as they come and go but my contact has communicated to me last week that he wont be able to get me this info for maybe a month or two due to his (the systems) work load but I will be still chasing this.
This info can change of course due to weather conditions and jet-stream winds so please don't take it as exact, but it should be a very good guide to help us determine the unusual flight paths that we come across and get reported here from time to time versus the "normal international traffic". |

I'll try and answer John's request on what aircraft types fly to NZ
That's large commercial jets of course as the military stuff might not come in during the day but I will list those that I have seen or heard of flying here
OK here goes
This is the commercial stuff
Boeing 747 including -200, -300 and -400 models (some are pure freighters)
Boeing 767-200 and 300's
Boeing 737's various models
Boeing 727's various models
Boeing 757 (very few)
Boeing 767's various models
Boeing 777's various models
Airbus A310 various models
Airbus A320 various models
Airbus A340 various models
Soon there will be A380's (the double decker baby)
MD 11
DC 10 (maybe as this is getting old now)
Douglas DC-9 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and 90 series
Russian Antonov AN124
I can post pictures if anybody would like :?: |

Right
To the best of my knowledge that's it for International flights into and from NZ for commercial carriers
I found this info on the airport sites and I have checked several times to make sure I got it correct
One thing I did see was that some flights are seasonal and of course airlines reserve the right to start and end services as they see fit
What will be more challenging is to find out what military stuff comes and for that I reckon we need eyes and ears around NZ for this
Anybody out there please help with this part. :?:
What would be good to see are photos of aircraft that look unusual :!: |

Good work Info4,
What we'd really like to have now is the relevant course vectors to and from each NZ city. With that info we can then produce a relatively definitive map of all normal NZ international flight vectors. |

And then there are all the jet routes within New Zealand between domestic airports.
A common military route between October and February is Pago Pago - Christchurch for the McMurdo/Scott Base/South Pole re-supply flights by C141's and the like. They approach over Gisborne and track east of Wellington before descending to Christchurch.
Remind us again... What are you going to use this map for? |

Correct and these will be available soon

To essentially find the anomalies. i.e. the flights that would appear to NOT BE genuine NZ commercial traffic
NZ air-force could just about be counted out with only 2 757's that could be responsible for PT's but I guess they could be responsible for some traffic up and down country. |

Hmm...
Google: Tucows +"flight explorer"
I think the subscription for access to the data is $US9.95/month. |

Yes, Flight Explorer does indeed allow you to track commercial flights over New Zealand. Here's the link to the Flight Explorer website:
http://www.flightexplorer.com/personal/personalEdition.aspx
Info from the site:
| Quote: | Flight Explorer Personal Edition allows private pilots and aviation enthusiasts to track commercial and general aviation flights on IFR flight plans in the US, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands; Canada; New Zealand; and parts of the Atlantic and Pacific.
A Flight Explorer Personal Edition subscription costs just US$9.95 per month. It includes up to 10 hours per month of flight tracking services. If you exceed 10 hours per month, additional hours are charged at US$1.95/hour for up to 50 hours. If you exceed 50 hours in a month the cost increases to US$3.49/hour. Each logon is charged at a 10-minute minimum |
Bear in mind though, that Flight Explorer will not display military flights:
| Quote: | | The FAA filters out military, non-US registered, and sensitive traffic. Other than that, you can track any IFR, VFR (with flight following requested), and Canadian registry GA flights. |
This omission is useful in one regard, if you spot a trail and it doesn't show up on Flight Explorer then you may be reasonably assured that it is a military or 'sensitive' flight...
Here's a very revealing report of some research using Flight Explorer conducted in 2001 above Houston Texas:
http://www.chemtrailcentral.com/report.shtml
| Quote: | Summary of Results
The goal of this research was to determine if there was a type of trail that was inconsistent with normal contrails, especially with regard to increased persistence. What was found is that highly persistent trails that last for many hours were seen above Houston, TX on a majority (60%) of observable days during the data collection period. However during this time period none of the 46 Flight Explorer confirmed contrails observed persisted for over 30 minutes and most contrails were under 30 seconds of persistence. Additionally it was discovered that the jets that were responsible for leaving highly persistent trails that last for hours did not ever appear on Flight Explorer and were documented for 8 separate instances, including one instance with two jets in formation. These unidentifiable jets were found to produce a contrail that was consistent with confirmed contrails during the periods when they weren't leaving highly persistent trails. Highly persistent trails are often seen in the form of isolated relatively short strips, as well as large areas of cirrus aviaticus clouds, but on rare occasions have been seen in totally unique grid and wheel formations.
It is hoped that others will endeavor to repeat these observations and publish their results. By repeating the basic observations for persistence length and whether the flight appears on Flight Explorer, it will be seen whether or not a trend emerges confirming the existence of a unique category of trail. Atmospheric differences due to higher moisture and colder temperatures in different locations will produce greater maximum persistence observed for identifiable traffic. For those in locations with greatest contrailing potential, the task of collecting data on highly persistent trails from unidentifiable flights will be hardest.
In this research I have gone to great lengths to measure and characterize my observations as accurately as possible in order to provide the clearest representation possible given the resources available.

Hi team
I have subscribed to Flight Explorer a couple of days ago.
What a great program
I have been slowly learning how to use it and at first it looks a little overwhelming.
But I have learnt how to use the filters to exclude all of the "little planes" as all we are interested in is the commercial jets.
Makes for interesting reading, observing and already I have been able to log onto the airport arrivals and departures to confirm the information. It is great in that it will give you aircraft type and height (pretty important details)
I recommend to anybody who maybe interested, we could even get a bunch of people using this and between us we could cover a large time frame.
Downside is as John has shown above you get 10 hrs for 10 USD
That's why if many use it we could get greater coverage (co-ordinated of course) flight data
Check it out :thumbsup |

If you are going back over old forum posts, you should come across references to this project in many posts...
Go here: http://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1038 and read below the heading "Establishing the Forums" - we refer to how we made use of Flight Explorer data with info4's help... |
