Fog hung around for most of the morning .... opened up to sky full of murky mat of cirrus. PTs galore ... north-south and east-west bands. A range of dissipation behaviour - strange I thought. From what I observed, all of the forms in the images below are the result of PTs ... with the cirrus mat as a backdrop. The cirrus thinned during the day. Most of the images have been adjusted to show detail - the glare was painful.

6. These two southbound PTs are not much older than each other, but dissipated completely different. Defies logic.

The "apparent" lack of activity up here was starting to make me think maybe there were other less obvious techniques starting to be used. I say apparent though because it's much more likely I haven't been "in the right place at the right time" and there's also been loads of days when decent "real cloud" cover that would've hidden everything. There's certainly been "signs" of activity, many similar to the above, but I think I've missed plenty up here. Last night was a perfect example - the fairly fresh remnants of the very obvious trail off the west coast. Oh well, here's to clearer skies and me being out there with my camera. Hopefully you other westies in Auckland are reading this and will also have your cameras ready at all times too! :wink:

PS .... I saw PT being laid late last night - a star-studded sky ... very different conditions to the daylight hours ....

Trying to see a pattern in all this - if there is indeed a pattern .... (shaking my head) ... if only ... I had kept a 'formal' record of my obs (relied on photographic evidence and anecdotal notes) for the years I have been watching. Raw data - key to understanding what going on - better equipped to question other 'understandings'.

Crakka - what was Auckland sky showing this time last year .. I have been browsing through some of Sept 08 posts - similar, eg. high cirrus cover and haze. It is pollen time - the pine and wattle are full on. The pollen definitely brings on a haze.

Ok today was funny. Lots of normal fluffy type clouds but tons of that spidery cirrus stuff behind and alongside it, very white and lots of really weird shapes and patterns especially as the day wore on. Some quite freaky looking shapes. I'd say this was quite similar to last year at this time from memory actually ruapaka. I feel pretty certain of seeing some activity around this time :wink:

Ahh, I posted these here not because they were taken on the date specified in the title of the thread. These pics have been taken during the months of August and September of the sky around and above Wellington NZ.
