7 September ...

A lot of high cloud – southerly looming. Many PTs observed during the day - dissipated and blended quickly. I have included some images taken around 11am of northbound craft. The sky-scape was rather impressive - there were some intense bright patches as well.

Image #2 is close up of the older PT in first image. I have included an ob of trail dissipation - the trail having similar attributes as this one.

Image #3 gives weight to the ‘beam’ phenomena being shadow rather than a ‘track’.

9 September ...
Not many overhead PTs - to the west I observed southbound PTs - also drifting remnants spotted.

Must have been a bee in the cockpit of the craft in image #5.

Image #6 ... (around 5pm -Totara Flat, Pelorus Bridge area) -this cloud form was just sitting there – a little unusual looking, so out came the camera. Then as I am taking some shots along came a plane laying a trail – the trail stops just before the cloud form as the plane flies through the middle of it – the trail resumes as the plane emerges on the other side. If PTs are about ‘saturation with respect to ice’ then why has that cloud formed - and not a trail?

Image #7 ... sun almost setting - I spotted faint iridescent colours on edge of cirrus? cloud patch. Possibly aligned with sun’s arc ?? which is just out of shot on right.

Observation ...

Late avo on 5 September I was sitting on the veranda having a ciggy and watching a southbound PT to the west dissipating quickly and evenly. I was using the binoculars instead of the camera – got a good close-up look at the trail breaking down. Most of the trail just faded away, yet at fairly regular points, small blobs lingered. They had an intense brightness with iridescent colours just visible. As I watched I saw thin lines of ‘ice’?/cloud? shoot out from them – (refer image below - my crude attempt to draw what I saw happening).

Note image #2 above in relation to this ob ... the uppermost part of the trail ... those blob bits – same look as the blobs I observed - (refer close-up below).

I have noticed a lot of very bright, almost irridescent, "cloud" lately on brighter days up here that just doesn't look quite right. It's very "white" looking compared to what I call normal cloud also see at the same time and on occasion looks like it's almost not there if that makes sense at all lol! What I mean is on blue sky days there's a kind of faint look of something like cloud in the blueness that's hard to see unless you focus on it - then later it often forms into that bright stuff I mentioned. I thought it might be because it was getting closer and therefore more visible but I also observed it in clouds moving across the front of me completely perpendicular to the direction I was looking. Today was a good example but alas no camera.

I also observed a definite trail out west this evening around sundown towards an area that would have been west of the airport and probably just off the coast. It was a bit longer than the short ones I normally see up here. I was cursing I didn't have time to get the camera and snap it as I haven't seen much lately probably due to cloud cover.
